The National Research Environment

How are Research Institutions (universities, research centers) organised nationally?

The universities in Slovakia are organized under the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic. The most important scientific institution in the country is the Slovak Center of Scientific and Technical Information. Universities are independent and have different approaches to publishing, disseminating and archiving scientific information.

Major research funders

Who are the major funders of research nationally and do any have OA policies or mandates?

The major funder of all scientific projects in the country is the government with the support of the EU. There are no national Open Access mandates.

Open Access and Repositories

Is there an awareness of Open Access within the research community nationally?

The Slovak research community is aware of Open Access benefits but is still reluctant to provide Open Access to their publications. The major constraints are that Open Access depositing takes their time and effort. Only a small fraction of researchers deposit their research papers - this is a result of proactive advocacy and training provided by the library staff.

And there are no Open Access repositories in Slovakia.

Open Access publishing

There are not many open access journals in Slovakia. Most of them are only available from the web pages of the institutions, which do not have any long-term preservation strategies so they often disappear from institutional websites.
