The OpenAIRE portal is based on the European OA repository infrastructure and provides

  • Tools  for publishing (depositing) EC funded publications
  • Efficient access to all European OA publications
  • Online support to researchers in depositing FP7 and ERC research publications
  • Support structures for repository managers to increase OA publishing
  • Information on Open Access policies and practices for individual researchers and research institutions

OpenAIRE provides “an electronic infrastructure and supporting mechanisms for the identification, deposition, access, and monitoring of FP7 and ERC funded articles”.  All deposited articles that result from EU-funded research projects are freely accessible through the www.openaire.eu portal. Thematically, OpenAIRE focuses on peer-reviewed publications in at least the seven disciplines highlighted in the Open Access pilot (energy, environment, health, cognitive systems-interaction-robotics, electronic infrastructures, science in society, and socioeconomic sciences-humanities). Geographically, it has a definitive “European footprint” by covering the European Union in its entirety, engaging people and scientific repositories in almost all 27 member states and beyond.

To achieve its aims, OpenAIRE establishes and operates a European Helpdesk and supports “a special repository for articles that can be stored neither in institutional nor in subject-based/thematic repositories”. The electronic infrastructure built by the project is based on state-of-the-art software services of the D-NET package developed within the DRIVER and DRIVER-II projects and the Invenio digital repository software developed at CERN.
