This is a guide on how to link ORCID scholarly works in OpenAIRE EXPLORE
Through the OpenAIRE EXPLORE discovery service, ORCID users can now instantly identify their works, and quickly add them to their ORCID iD through a trusted and straightforward process.
Prerequisites
- Creation of an ORCID account
If you don’t have one already, you can register at https://orcid.org/register, as this will be important in all future aspects of scholarly communication.
- Creation of an OpenAIRE account
Create an account by visiting OpenAIRE.
For access to the comprehensive services on the OpenAIRE EXPLORE portal, such as linking, claiming, or granting OpenAIRE permission to add, delete or edit work linked to your ORCID record, you'll need to Sign In. Conveniently, you can do this through various means: your email, EDUGAIn, ORCID, Gmail, Facebook, or LinkedIn accounts.
- Designate OpenAIRE as your trusted organization
The first time you identify a record in EXPLORE to claim in ORCID, you need to grant OpenAIRE permission to act as a trusted organization on your behalf. This allows OpenAIRE to make changes to your ORCID record.
When you click the "iD Claim" button, a popup window will appear, directing you to ORCID. Here, you will either log in or register for ORCID. You will then allow OpenAIRE to read trusted information and/or add or update research activities.
Once you have granted access to OpenAIRE, you will not have to do it again for any other interaction with ORCID.
This process will occur even if you have used your ORCID iD to log into OpenAIRE, so don’t worry about potential repetitions.

Both ORCID and OpenAIRE provide entry points. Users can connect their iD
- from the ORCID user interface, or
- from OpenAIRE EXPLORE
Access wizard through ORCID
As an ORCID user, navigate to the Works section on your https://orcid.org/my-orcid page. Click the Add button and select Search & link from the drop-down list. This will display a list of Available Search & Link wizards. From this list, choose the OpenAIRE EXPLORE member organization.
You will be redirected to a page on OpenAIRE EXPLORE. Here, you can search for and add any of your research outcomes (publications, research data, software, or other research products) to your ORCID iD.

Associate your scholarly work with your ORCID iD
As a signed-in user of OpenAIRE EXPLORE, click on Advanced search in the homepage. Select the Author field and type your name as an author of research products. OpenAIRE EXPLORE will display a list of articles potentially associated with your name. You can verify which articles are related to you and mark them accordingly. How do you do this? In the box containing research result information, just click on iD Claim. That's it! The publication is now added to your works in your ORCID record.
Di-associate scholarly works from your ORCID iD
If you want to delete an associated work from your ORCID record, select the iD Remove button.
Manage your OpenAIRE ORCID links
After granting access to OpenAIRE, a link to the "My ORCID links" page will appear under your name in the user menu, located at the top right. Here, you can view all the works added to your ORCID record via the OpenAIRE EXPLORE Portal. This is your personal control and overview page, where you may be prompted to discover and add more results.
There are three main actions you can perform:
- View ORCID work: This allows for a quick preview of the information stored in your ORCID record for this work.
- Update ORCID work: This allows you to update information previously added to your ORCID record for this work, especially if the current information in OpenAIRE is enriched.
- Remove: This allows you to remove this work from your ORCID record.
What are the green and black ORCID iD icons for authors?
While navigating through OpenAIRE EXPLORE, you may notice that an author's name is sometimes accompanied by either a green or black ORCID iD icon.
- A green ORCID iD icon indicates that the information on OpenAIRE is harvested or already verified from the ORCID Public Data File.
- A black ORCID iD icon signifies that the information on OpenAIRE is derived by OpenAIRE algorithms or is harvested from 3rd party repositories, and it is not yet verified from the ORCID Public Data File.
Once OpenAIRE synchronizes its data with ORCID, your ORCID links will appear in the OpenAIRE research results, and your name will be associated with the authorized green ORCID iD icon.
Research outcomes with the green icon next to your name are already in your ORCID record, whether manually entered or sourced from elsewhere. However, you can still import them from OpenAIRE EXPLORE. The OpenAIRE Research Graph often provides richer metadata, such as funding information and linked research data. You can set OpenAIRE EXPLORE as your preferred source in ORCID for duplicate works.
You also have the option to add research outcomes marked with the black icon, validate them as yours, or add ORCID iD information to enrich them.
