Building Open Science Skills: Insights from OpenAIRE NOADs
An OpenAIRE report based on NOAD discussion rounds and presentations showcases the variety of training approaches in Europe, addressing challenges and opportunities to overcome fragmentation
Earlier this year, the OpenAIRE Training and Support Standing Committee organized three engaging online sessions for NOADs focused on national Open Science skills building. Over these sessions, nine NOADs and an esteemed colleague from Japan discussed their experiences and strategies for training local stakeholders in Open Science, presenting various activities implemented in their countries. Now we are thrilled to present our report, a compilation of the insights shared by our speakers, to the wider Open Science community: You can find it in the OpenAIRE Zenodo community, together with the NOAD presentations.
The discussion rounds highlighted the strength of the OpenAIRE NOADs network in coordinating training programs and aligning national and institutional initiatives. Presentations underscored the importance of national strategies and dedicated funding for Open Science skills building, while also recognizing the impact of bottom-up initiatives. Cross-institutional networks and European projects play a crucial role in driving skills development. Despite progress, fragmentation in training ecosystems persists, emphasizing the need for defining core competencies and creating adaptable, scalable courses. Discussions also pointed to the demand for a unified European approach to doctoral programs in Open Science and the development of data steward training strategies.
We extend gratitude to our NOADs for generously sharing their experiences. Together, we can achieve more!
