OpenAIRE at the 53rd Annual LIBER Conference

LIBER 2024

The 53rd Annual LIBER Conference was held from July 3-5, 2024, hosted by the Cyprus University of Technology. This event brought together up to 400 librarians professionals from across Europe and beyond, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and innovations in the realm of open science and research libraries. OpenAIRE participated as exhibitors at this notable gathering, seizing the opportunity to engage with many new individuals and gather a wealth of fresh perspectives.

Connecting and Engaging with the Research Community

Our presence at the LIBER Conference was marked by fruitful interactions with attendees, including research professionals, librarians, and policy makers. The lively discussions at our booth underscored the shared commitment to advancing open science and highlighted the diverse needs and challenges faced by research institutions today providing invaluable insights to support the research communities.

Giulia Malaguarnera, outreach and engagement officer at OpenAIRE, introduced OpenAIRE and its pivotal role in promoting Open Science. She outlined OpenAIRE's strategic priorities for 2023-2025, emphasizing our commitment to advancing Open Science and our mission to drive scholarly communication towards openness and transparency.

From Publishing to Assessment

The presentation provided an in-depth perspective into the full cycle, from publishing to assessment. Briefly, it demonstrated how data collection from various sources, such as open access journals and repositories, facilitates the creation of bibliometrics, open science monitoring services and the discovery of various types of scholarly works. It highlighted the pivotal role of the OpenAIRE Graph in these processes.

Unveiling
OpenAIRE Graph

During the presentation, Giulia mentioned the key characteristics of the OpenAIRE Graph, placing emphasis on its integration into other services. Specifically, in the OpenAIRE EXPLORE service, the Graph enables users to efficiently navigate and search through extensive scholarly data. It is used for research evaluation incorporating metrics and indicators that emphasize in openness and transparency and access to information beyond publications such as data and software. Moreover, the Graph is used for OS monitoring by maintaining data related to monitoring Open Access and Open Science policies and is currently used in various services, such as Open Science Observatory, the EOSC Observatory, the Irish National OA Monitor and the OpenAIRE MONITOR. The OpenAIRE MONITOR service provides analysis and statistics from the OpenAIRE Graph and is curated by researchers and developers. It showcases dashboards with dynamic visualizations of Open Science activities, research outputs and performance, including Research Impact, funding and collaboration indicators on demand. She shared insights from ongoing project GraspOS and shared updates, demonstrating how they contribute to our broader goal of facilitating innovative ways to communicate and monitor research.

From Publishing to Assessment

Concluding the invaluable opportunities for synergy with librarians were highlighted. By collaborating closely with librarians, researchers and institutions can enhance the dissemination and accessibility of scientific knowledge promoting open science.
