PathOS Project Workshop: Open Science Monitoring and Research Libraries

PathOS project-workshop

The PathOS project contributed to the LIBER Conference 2024 by hosting a workshop focused on "Open Science Monitoring and Research Libraries." The workshop highlighted the crucial role that research libraries and librarians play in advancing Open Science.

The workshop was led by Antonia Correia and Pedro Principe from the University of Minho, and Tereza Simova from OpenAIRE. They provided an overview of the PathOS project's goals, the PathOS Open Science Resources Hub, Handbook of Open Science Indicators, scoping review on the societal impact of Open Science and other project´s outputs. Attendees engaged in group exercises to evaluate the usefulness and implementation of the Open Science indicators. This led to productive discussions on how these indicators can be applied in real-world environments and what might be missing from the current framework.

Participants appreciated the Handbook for its detailed descriptions and comprehensive guidance on Open Science indicators. They emphasised that the indicators are well-organized and offer clear methodologies for measuring Open Science practices. However, the participants strongly recommended that the handbook be enhanced by incorporating use cases or showcases. These practical examples would illustrate how to apply the Open Science indicators effectively, helping users understand how to measure Open Science uptake within their institutions. The inclusion of real-world applications would provide valuable context and make the handbook an even more practical tool for research librarians and other stakeholders.

This need is partially addressed by the Case studies and Open Science Stories included in the PathOS project, which showcases the real impact of Open Science and PathOS methodology in real-life scenarios. Nonetheless, we are grateful for this feedback and will work on further improving the handbook to ensure it meets the needs of its users even better.

PathOS Project Poster: Drawing Interest and Engagement

In addition to the workshop, the PathOS project presented a poster at the LIBER conference. The poster provided an overview of the project's objectives and key findings, sparking interest and engagement from many conference participants keen to learn more about the PathOS project's efforts and its potential impact on Open Science practices.

Synergy with Librarians: A Path Forward

Concluding the invaluable opportunities for synergy with librarians were highlighted. By collaborating closely with librarians, researchers and institutions can enhance the dissemination and accessibility of scientific knowledge promoting open science.
