Polish National Tripartite Event: EOSC for Open Science

The Polish National Tripartite Event took place between 24 and 26 October 2022. The hybrid event was organized by the National Science Centre under the theme "Open Science for Better Science" which underlined the added value of Open Science practices for research quality and integrity. 

The three-day event brought together various stakeholders: ministerial representatives, research funding and research performing organizations, HPC centers and service providers, open science competence centers as well as researchers. The aim of the event was to discuss the idea of the EOSC initiative and its implementation in Poland, on the national and institutional level.

European perspective on the latest EOSC developments

The opening session was dedicated to the tripartite collaboration, especially in the broad scope of open science policy developments and EOSC implementation. After the welcomes from Zbigniew Błocki, the Director of the National Science Centre and Mateusz Gaczyński, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Science, the presentations were given by Pantelis Tziveloglou (European Commission), Marialuisa Lavitrano (EOSC Association), and Volker Beckmann (EOSC Steering Board). 

The speakers presented European perspectives on Open Science as well as the latest EOSC developments.

Coordinating and strengthening Open Science activities in Poland

In the following two days the event took place online. Separate sessions were devoted to funding for open science, infrastructures, skills and competences, services and tools. Speakers included, among others, representatives of European and Polish service providers and , research performing organizations, research projects and networks, competence centres, or training initiatives.

OpenAIRE services were presented by Natalia Gruenpeter from the Open Science Platform team, responsible for the OpenAIRE National Open Access Desk in Poland. The talk focused on the role of OpenAIRE in the development of interoperability guidelines and scholarly communication services, designed for tracking open science, discovering open research, and monitoring open research.


Key messages from the event

  • there is a need for strategic coordination in implementing EOSC on the national and organizational level, 
  • stakeholders' engagement is crucial for increasing the impact of Open Science and EOSC in Poland, 
  • Open Science is a multifaceted concept, as such it it requires collaboration across multiple stakeholder. 

In Poland, the EOSC Network has been established to support the development of EOSC, coordinate and strengthen EOSC-related activities at the national level and embed them in the international context of EOSC. The informal group is coordinated by the National Science Centre, a national representative to EOSC SB and a mandated organisation to EOSC Association. "EOSC–Network Poland" gathers experts from members and observers of the EOSC Association and is open to any institutions engaged with EOSC or Open Science.
