Arianna Becerril-García (Executive Director, Redalyc, Professor, UAEM, Chair, AmeliCA) talks about AmeliCA - a multi-institutional community-driven initiative supported by UNESCO and led by Redalyc and CLACSO aimed to provide a cooperative, sustainable, protected and non-comercial infrastructure for Open Knowledge. Tanja Niemann (Executive Director, Érudit) and Jason Friedman (Manager, Member and Metadata Services, Canadian Research Knowledge Network) talk about Coalition Publica and the Partnership for Open Access: Canada's Cooperative Non APC Publishing Model. Jean-Claude Guédon discusses the current landscape, challenges, collaborations, "inside-out" libraries (Lorcan Dempsey's vocabulary), and provides recommendations about fostering a richer bibliodiversity and ensuring publication and access equality for all. And Iryna Kuchma (EIFL Open Access Programme Manager, OpenAIRE) presents the OpenAIRE report Towards Sustainable Cooperative and Non-APC Publishing Model

We are pleased to announce that the guest speaker of this webinar is legal expert Prodromos Tsiavos, Legal Adviser of "Athena" Research & Innovation Center and OpenAIRE.

The GDPR complexity resulted in the need to better understand the regulation’s provisions and how it is applied in the research conduct, also in line with Open Science. The purpose of the webinar is to analyze important issues surrounding the application of the Regulation at all stages of the research lifecycle. More specifically, the webinar will examine the following:

  • The basic concepts of GDPR
  • The exception for scientific research
  • Special categories of personal data
  • Management of personal data within the research cycle

OpenAIRE is happy to announce two public webinars in our Legal Policy Webinar series: one on Wednesday April 29th, and the other on Monday May 4th, at 2 PM CEST

How do you deal with sensitive personal data in biomedical research? What are potential privacy issues when using personal data for your research? What do you need to know about the GDPR and the new PSI directive?  

In these webinars, our experts Prodromos Tsiavos (Senior Legal Advisor - ARC/ Head of Digital and Innovation - Onassis Group), Thomas Margoni (CREATE Glasgow) and Jacques Flores Dourojeanni (Research Data Management Consultant Utrecht University Library) will provide a legal perspective on research data management - both theoretical and practical. Given the current health crisis, the practical examples will focus on biomedical sciences and medical data - but the webinars will be relevant for researchers and research admin from all fields (including social sciences and humanities). 

We invite researchers and research support staff to join these webinars. The webinar on April 29th will have a researcher-centered approach, while the webinar on May 4th will focus on research support and advice services. Of course , you are welcome to attend both webinars, but take into account that there might be some overlap. 

Both webinars will allow for generous Q&A time, and you have the possibility to submit your questions at registration. 

You will receive the webinar link upon registration and in the reminder email sent in the morning of the webinar. 

29th April 2 PM CEST: Webinar aimed at PhD students/ researchers : recommendations for researchers on reusing data -  legal aspects: what you need to know about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and PSI (Public Sector Information) Directive - common misperceptions and troubleshooting -  practical examples. 

4th May 2 PM CEST: Webinar aimed at research support staff: what are relevant things to know when it comes to GDPR, new PSI directive and IPR - how to advise researchers - common misperceptions and troubleshooting - practical examples.

The OpenAIRE Team is happy to welcome as guest speaker Nancy Pontika, Open Science Aggregation Officer at Core, to talk about open science and open research data. During the webinar, Nancy will analyse the Open Science and Open Data principles as well as highlight the importance and benefits of communicating our research, also known as Scholarly Communication. The fact that Open Science is a priority for the EU, expressed in the recent years as precondition for funding, has resulted in integration of good practices for Open Science in national research ecosystems mostly by redefining workflows and enhancing current research support services. 


By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • comprehend the concepts of Open Science and Open Data
  • know of new resources and education material on both concepts
  • know the latest developments and updates in the fields
  • practice on applying or help others apply these concepts

OpenAIRE is pleased to announce the beta release of its Research Graph, a massive collection of metadata and links between scientific products such as articles, datasets, software, and other research products, entities like organisations, funders, funding streams, projects, communities, and data sources. Due to its coverage and cross-discipline nature, the Research Graph will empower the EOSC catalogue of scientific products.

On January 30th, 2020, OpenAIRE is organizing its final webinar in the first consultation series.

Plan S compliance for Open Access Journals - what we know so far and where we think we're heading by Dominic Mitchell (DOAJ)

In September 2018 when cOAlition S put out their Plan S for making Open Access an immediate reality, there was concern about how journals would become compliant in the short time available and what exactly was required to do that. The guidance mentioned that being indexed in DOAJ is necessary but that is only one criteria of many. There are other, new criteria which are additional to the DOAJ ones. DOAJ, among others, is mentioned as a key player in the certification process so the DOAJ Team have looked very carefully at what is being asked. One of the problems is that the exact data to be captured for those requirements have not yet been set and work by cOAlition S to do that is only slated to start imminently. In this presentation, I will explain what those extra Plan S criteria might be and how we think that they might be measured and captured. I will explain how we think the certification process, at least at DOAJ, might go and what the difference is between DOAJ certification and Plan S certification.

The global shift towards making research findings available free of charge and sharing and opening up the research process, so-called 'Open Science’, has been a core strategy in the European Commission to improve knowledge circulation and innovation.

It is illustrated in particular by the Open Science policies for the EC's framework programme. This webinar will talk about the OS policies for open access to scientific publications and the pilot for research data in Horizon 2020, followed by a preview of what to expect for Open Science in the new Horizon Europe programme.

In this 'double bill' webinar, we first hear about the basic principles of Research Data Management, explained by S. Venkataraman from Digital Curation Centre (DCC). Participants are pointed to essential tools and standards, as well as a number of good practices related to RDM and data management planning.

In the second part of the webinar, Thomas Margoni from CREATe illustrates the legal framework around the complex issue of data ownership and will try to explain in non legal terms what the law says, what researchers need to know, what is the role of Open Science principles in this area, and what kind of supporting material OpenAIRE has produced to assist researchers.

In 2014 the OpenAPC project was established at Bielefeld University Library and has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (2015 - 2018) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (2018 - 2020).

In this webinar we focus on how institutions can become part of the OpenAPC project. We briefly discuss the data format and processing and how the concept of transparency is applied to all steps of the data lifecycle in OpenAPC.

In addition, we also focus on benefits for participating institutions. Finally, the re-use of OpenAPC data in other projects is shown, in particular the integration of the OpenAPC data set into the OpenAIRE research graph.

Webinar to Support Open Science Policy Creation and Legal Issues

Are you developing an open science policy in your organization? Do you need extra support to align it to other policies, or information on legal issues on research data such as licensing and copyright issues?

 OpenAIRE is offering a series of webinars targeting Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) that explore policy and legal issues around Open Science/ Open Access. The aim of the webinars is to support RPOs and RFOs in developing and/or aligning their Open Science policies by discussing the elements that a policy should include and legal issues that should be taken into consideration, and presenting the ways in which OpenAIRE can support them in their work through the NOAD network.

 The first one-hour webinar will take place on May 20th, 2019 at 13h CEST and targets stakeholders (from research organisations, funders and ministries) interested in open science policies. The webinar will present the policy templates developed by the OpenAIRE project, followed by examples of practical implementation. The webinar will also focus on how to approach licensing issues in the context of open science policies supported by best practice examples.

The OpenAIRE team welcomed as guest speakers to present their work at the TU Delft in the Netherlands: Marta Teperek, Data Stewardship project coordinator and Esther Plomp, data steward of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

During the webinar Marta talks about the Data Stewardship project at TU Delft. To comprehensively address disciplinary data management needs around the campus, TU Delft appointed a dedicated Data Steward at every faculty. During this webinar you will find out who are the data stewards, what background do they have, what support do they offer to the research community and how are they funded. In addition, Marta also discusses some key challenges and future plans.
