The Guild lecture on Academic Freedom: Balancing openness and security in the ERA Act
The freedom of scientific research is increasingly challenged across Europe and globally, raising concerns about how to safeguard scientific excellence while protecting democratic values. At the same time, geopolitical shifts and intensifying competition are placing greater emphasis on research security, prompting questions about the limits and responsibilities associated with international scientific collaboration.
In this context, the forthcoming European Research Area (ERA) Act offers a key opportunity to examine how the principles of scientific freedom and research security may coexist in practice. How might new safeguards affect international collaboration? Can efforts to ensure research security strengthen or inadvertently constrain the freedom of scientific research?
To explore these questions, The Guild, in collaboration with the University of Tartu, is organising its second Academic Freedom Lecture. The event will feature Prof. Liviu Matei (King’s College London), who will discuss the potential role of the ERA Act in navigating the tensions between maximising scientific freedom and ensuring responsible and secure research collaboration. His lecture will set the stage for a broader discussion with a distinguished panel and the audience.
