As part of the 2026 United Nations Science Summit (SSUNGA81), the online session “Building Global Student Research Capacity Through Open Science Networks” will explore how Open Science, AI-enabled analytical tools and international collaboration can expand meaningful research opportunities for students worldwide.

Using Pika Team as a case study, speakers will discuss practical approaches for engaging students in real-world research using open datasets across health, sustainability and other Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) domains. The session will examine barriers to participation, including access to mentorship, computational resources and research infrastructure, and highlight strategies for building inclusive research ecosystems through partnerships among schools, universities, nonprofits, libraries and community organisations.

Natalia Manola, CEO of OpenAIRE, will participate as a panellist, contributing to the discussion on how Open Science and international collaboration can support more inclusive research ecosystems and expand opportunities for students to participate in scientific research.

The session is part of the Science Summit at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (SSUNGA81) and will take place entirely online.

Date: 18 September 2026
Time: 19:00–20:45 CEST
