OpenAIRE AMKE is a non-profit company operating as a service provider for the European Research ecosystem for the past 15years. We are seeking a Data Engineer to enter our team in building high-performing, scalable, enterprise-grade applications.

Key responsibilities

    • Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable data pipelines for processing large-scale datasets.
    • Optimize and manage SQL-based databases to ensure performance and reliability.
    • Utilize Java for developing and maintaining data engineering solutions and integrations.
    • Collaborate with teams to build efficient data architectures using Big Data tools like Apache Spark, Hive, Impala, and HDFS.
    • Version control using Git for tracking code changes, collaborating with team members, and ensuring code quality.
    • Manage build automation and dependencies using Maven in Java-based projects.
    • Support the development of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, ensuring data consistency and reliability.
    • Troubleshoot and optimize performance issues across data pipelines and large distributed systems.
    • Work closely with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver actionable insights. 

Qualifications, Skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer with a strong focus on SQL and Java development.
  • Hands-on experience with Big Data tools such as Apache Spark, Hive, Impala, and HDFS.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.
  • Solid experience in Java development, with the ability to write efficient, maintainable code.
  • Familiarity with Maven for managing Java projects and building dependencies.
  • Proficiency in Git for version control and code management.
  • Experience with ETL frameworks and building data processing pipelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and services such as AWS Glue, Google BigQuery, or Azure Data Lake.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Terms of employment

  • The position is offered for a period of two-years as an associate  (self employed, i.e., "blokaki"), renewable upon satisfactory performance.
  • This will be a full-time position
  • Selected candidates will join forces with the OpenAIRE team located in Athens, at Athena Research Center in Marousi. We apply a hybrid mode of work environment, with ideally a physical presence on premises  2 days a week. But if you're an exceptional candidate, we're open to considering fully remote work options. We value talent and expertise, no matter where you're located!
  • Depending on skills and experience, gross salary for a full-time position will be in the range of 36.000 EUR to 55.000 EUR per year. The salary is intended to be gross, i.e. taxes, insurance, etc. are included.
  • We only accept candidates who already have an EU work permit
