The Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) and the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, are pleased to announce that the next COAR Annual Meeting and pre-conference sessions will take place from Monday, May 14 to Thursday, May 17, 2018 in Hamburg, Germany.
Research communication is developing towards the paradigm of open science, with the aim of accelerating the pace of new discoveries and greatly increasing the impact and benefits of research beyond the academy. Although there is widespread consensus about the need to move towards open science, it has not been established how open access and open science will be implemented on the ground, how it will be funded, and what will be the responsibilities of various stakeholders.
COAR believes the globally distributed network of more than 3000 repositories can be leveraged to create a more sustainable and innovative system for sharing and building on the results of research. Collectively, repositories can provide a comprehensive view of the research of the whole world, while also enabling each scholar and institution to participate in the global network of scientific and scholarly enquiry. Building additional services such as standardized usage metrics, peer review and social networking on top of a trusted global network of repositories has the potential to offer a viable, open and more sustainable alternative to the existing system.
But how do we get there? Where do we stand now on this journey towards this vision? And what pitfalls lay ahead? The COAR Annual Meeting 2018 meeting will bring together the global repository community together to addressed these questions. The meetings will take place at the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics in Hamburg, Germany and include workshops, regional updates, and thought provoking talks to address these issues. The meeting provides an opportunity for participants to catch up on latest trends, learn more about next generation repositories and exchange views with colleagues from all over the world.
Please note – The COAR Annual Meeting 2018 is restricted to a maximum number of 100 participants. Registration will be restricted to COAR members, partners, and invited guests until March 5, 2018. As the main target group for the meeting are representatives of research performing or research funding organisations, registrations from these organisations will be treated with priority.
