The European Commission has conducted an Open Access Pilot in FP7 - in which a number of selected projects where mandated to provide Open Access to the scientific peer reviewed publications resulting from those projects. 

In Horizon 2020, the European Commission announced that the Open Access Pilot would be transformed into a mandate, obliging all H2020 projects to provide Open Access to their scientific peer reviewed publications (read more about this on our dedicated page Open Access in Horizon2020). Additionally, the EC has installed an Open Research Data Pilot for a selected number of projects - encouraging them to provide Open Access to all 

their research output, publications as well as datasets.

OpenAIRE aims to support these policies by providing a supporting infrastructure for participating projects, informing them about Open Access and providing them with tools and services in order to make sharing research easy.
