Knowledge Commons Café Part 2: From Open Access to Open Agency
As part of International Open Access Week 2025 and this year's theme “Who Owns Our Knowledge?”, OpenAIRE presents the Knowledge Commons Café: Who Owns the Knowledge?, a two-part series of open conversations on trust, AI, and the future of open knowledge.
The way knowledge is discovered is changing fast. In the age of AI, most users will not search repositories or journals, they will ask a chatbot. This shift raises urgent questions: Who controls the data that feeds AI, and how can we protect trust, provenance, and openness?
This session explores how trusted, federated literature hubs can help the research community reclaim agency over how scientific content is shared and reused for AI training.
We will discuss:
-
How discovery and ownership are shifting in the LLM era
-
Why trust and governance are crucial for open knowledge
-
How trusted hubs could work technically, legally, and financially and support the whole community
-
What rules, standards, and governance principles might look like
-
How to build momentum and coalitions around this idea
This Café is an interactive, informal discussion, not just a presentation. Participants are invited to share their views, challenge assumptions, and help shape next steps toward a community-driven model for trusted knowledge sharing.
Who should join:
-
Researchers, repository and infrastructure operators
-
Funders, policymakers, scholarly societies, libraries
-
AI developers and data stewards
-
Legal and governance experts
