Educating the scientific society in Latvia during the Open Access Week 2018: rolling the right way

Open Access (OA) Week 2018 events were organized in Latvia for its scientific society and for those who are interested in the field for the 9th time so far. Although the work with scientific society about the open processes is done on plan and on demand, the offical events of the Open Access week European-wide are the central to bring together everyone interested in the field to discuss and share the ideas and understandings.

The highlight of the activities this year was a practical seminar “Open Science for Successful Research Grants” run by the host  Ivo Grigorov, research coordinator at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU AQUA). The host was persuasive in his message about the attraction of the financial resources to research projects, as well as about the  Open Science inclusiveness in research projects. He gave the analysis of specific examples and highlighted the mistakes made most often. Grigorov nevertheless insisted that researchers should think about the application for a grant as united entity where ideas and plans match in all units of the application.

Sarah Jones, a researcher at the University of Glasgow and The Digital Curation Centre (DCC), was invited to give a solid online presentation about the Data Management Plans (DMP). The researcher stressed out the main criteria to be considered while designing DMP, with FAIR principles in data management  and specific information and communication technologies in use, as well as options of sharing data in open access.  Jones from the other part of Europe shared a very useful and easy to understand information about DMP to be used globally.

A lecturer from the University of Latvia (UL) Liene Viļuma  presented  the deeper understanding and meaning of data as she also is a researcher at the Lab of Perception and Cognitive Systems  of  UL.

Full information about the Latvia’s participation in OpenAIRE – Advance project was given once again by representative of NOAD-Latvia as well as the privileges of Open Science and the conditions and options to publish data  in research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 were pointed out for the participants of the organized seminars.

To give a brief summary about the OA week events and shared understandings Gita Rozenberga from NOAD-Latvia says that the interest of scientific society in Latvia about the open access activities grows every year, as well as the knowledge level about the open processes and open science in particular. It is indicated that researchers needs have increased as well. Researchers are looking for a strong support in open access principles to be used in practice. The main task of the support team is to show the right way where to find answers on questions about the open science and on projects of support for research. Information and communication technologies are the key to many options. A big amount of work still remains to be done in educating the society – researchers as individuals, research institutions in Latvia and other parties - about the benefits of using open access principles.
