OpenAIRE (Open Access Infrastructure for Research in Europe), funded by the EC 7th Framework Programme (FP7), aimed to support the implementation of Open Access in Europe. It provided the means to promote and realize the widespread adoption of the Open Access Policy, as set out by the ERC Scientific Council Guidelines for Open Access and the Open Access (OA) pilot launched by the European Commission (EC).
OpenAIRE established the infrastructure for researchers to support them in complying with the EC OA pilot and the ERC Guidelines on Open Access by extending the DRIVER infrastructure to link scholarly publications via the OpenAIRE portal and e-Infrastructure for the repository networks. It created an extensive distributed Helpdesk system, at the core of which was the network of 27 National Open Access Desks (NOADs) throughout Europe. The OpenAIRE project also began to explore scientific data management services with various disciplinary communities, and created Zenodo, a catch-all repository facility for researchers who do not have access to an institutional or discipline-specific repository.
