OpenAIRE’s Continued Commitment to Openness: Advancing Compliance with POSI Principles
Trust, transparency, and community governance are essential for open scholarly infrastructures to remain reliable and sustainable over time. In 2020, OpenAIRE publicly aligned itself with the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI), sharing a detailed assessment of its compliance with POSI v1.0. Five years later, with the release of POSI v2.0 (October 2025), OpenAIRE has completed a new and comprehensive self-assessment, demonstrating not only continuity but significant progress.
Today, we are pleased to share the positive trajectory of OpenAIRE’s alignment with POSI v2.0, including the OpenAIRE Graph, and highlight how our evolution as an open scholarly infrastructure continues to be driven by transparency, community stewardship, and sustainability.
From POSI v1.0 to v2.0: strengthening an already solid foundation
OpenAIRE’s earlier assessment of POSI v1.0 reflected a strong baseline: transparent governance, broad community representation, open-source software, and a clear commitment to ensuring that our metadata, services, and software remain accessible as a public good.
Since then, OpenAIRE has expanded its service portfolio, further matured its governance model, diversified its sustainability pathways, and clarified long-term stewardship responsibilities. The new POSI v2.0 assessment confirms that this growth did not dilute our core values; on the contrary, it strengthened them.
A strong trajectory of improvement and maturity
The 2025 POSI v2.0 assessment demonstrates that OpenAIRE is “aligned in practice” on most elements of governance, sustainability, and technical resilience. Some highlights:
- Most governance and insurance principles are fully compliant
- Sustainability shows major progress, especially with the introduction of revenue models that preserve the public-good nature of the infrastructure
- Critical future-oriented principles, such as financial reserves, are actively under development
For the community, this means greater confidence that OpenAIRE’s services, data, and software will remain open, accountable, and reliable over time.
Looking ahead: a continued commitment to openness
The scholarly community depends on infrastructures that remain open, transparent, and community-driven now and into the future. OpenAIRE’s sustained engagement with POSI demonstrates our commitment to being such an infrastructure.
As we move forward, we will continue strengthening governance processes, expanding sustainable funding pathways, improving transparency, and ensuring our software and data remain open and replicable.
OpenAIRE will keep evolving, but our mission remains constant: to serve as a trusted, open, and resilient infrastructure for global Open Science.
