Rebuilding Libraries. Restoring Hope.

May 16, 2023
On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria, marking the most powerful earthquake to hit the region in over 80 years. The initial earthquake was soon followed by another and hundreds of aftershocks, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

The librarian community in the region was not spared, with many libraries and cultural institutions sustaining significant damage or being destroyed.

In the wake of this tragedy, there have been many calls to support the librarian community in Turkey. As a response, an aid campaign was launched in collaboration with the Turkish Librarians Association (TLA), University and Research Librarians Association (UNAK), and Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS).

Our NOAD in Turkey and Member of OpenAIRE Executive Board, Gultekin Gurdal, Library Director, Izmir Institute of Technology, informed us about the current situation in the country, including the challenges faced by the librarian community.

As a network, OpenAIRE owes its success and sustainability to its people, with the community playing a vital role in shaping our organisation and helping us navigate challenges. Thus, we stand in solidarity with the wider and librarian community in Turkey and decided to offer our support by contributing 3000 euros towards the aid campaign.

Together we can achieve more.
