Adipose-derived endothelial and mesenchymal stem cells enhance vascular network formation on three-dimensional constructs in vitro

Alina Freiman; Yulia Shandalov; Dekel Rozenfeld; Erez Shor; Sofia Segal; Dror Ben-David; Shai Meretzki; Dana Egozi; Shulamit Levenberg (2016)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been gaining fame mainly due to their vast clinical potential, simple isolation methods and minimal donor site morbidity. Adipose-derived MSCs and microvascular endothelial cells have been shown to bear angiogenic and vasculogenic capabilities. We hypothesized that co-culture of human adipose-derived MSCs with human adipose-derived microvascular endothelial cells (HAMECs) will serve as an effective cell pair to induce angi...

Mosaicism for structural non-centromeric autosomal rearrangement in prenatal diagnoses: evidence for sex-specific selection against chromosomal abnormalities

Natalia Kovaleva; Philip Cotter (2017)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Mosaicism for chromosome rearrangements is common in preimplantation diagnoses, yet is rare in prenatal diagnoses as well as in other groups of patients referred to cytogenetic testing. Consequently, there is a lack of detailed studies on this kind of mosaicism in all groups of patients. Previous reports have identified a deficit of males among asymptomatic carriers of N/unbalanced Rea. Three mechanisms were proposed for explaining this phenomenon, including a high instabi...

Synteny analysis of genes and distribution of loci controlling oil content and fatty acid profile based on QTL alignment map in Brassica napus

Nadia Raboanatahiry; Hongbo Chao; Liangxing Guo; Jianping Gan; Jun Xiang; Mingli Yan; Libin Zhang; Longjiang Yu; Maoteng Li (2017)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Deciphering the genetic architecture of a species is a good way to understand its evolutionary history, but also to tailor its profile for breeding elite cultivars with desirable traits. Aligning QTLs from diverse population in one map and utilizing it for comparison, but also as a basis for multiple analyses assure a stronger evidence to understand the genetic system related to a given phenotype. Results In this study, 439 genes involved in fatty acid (FA) and triacylglyc...

Supplementary material from "On the occurrence of three non-native cichlid species including the first record of a feral population of Pelmatolapia (Tilapia) mariae (Boulenger, 1899) in Europe"

Thermally influenced freshwater systems provide suitable conditions for non-native species of tropical and subtropical origin to survive and form proliferating populations beyond their native ranges. In Germany, non-native convict cichlids (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) have established populations in the Gillbach, a small stream that receives warm water discharge from a local power plant. Here, we report on the discovery of spotted tilapia (Pelmatolapia mariae) in ...

Multiple-clone infections of Plasmodium vivax: definition of a panel of markers for molecular epidemiology

Aracele de Souza; Flávia de Araújo; Cor Fontes; Luzia Carvalho; Cristiana de Brito; Taís de Sousa (2015)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Plasmodium vivax infections commonly contain multiple genetically distinct parasite clones. The detection of multiple-clone infections depends on several factors, such as the accuracy of the genotyping method, and the type and number of the molecular markers analysed. Characterizing the multiplicity of infection has broad implications that range from population genetic studies of the parasite to malaria treatment and control. This study compared and evaluated the efficienc...

Prevalence and factors associated with VIA positive result among clients screened at Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia, south west area office, Jimma model clinic, Jimma, Ethiopia 2013: a cross-sectional study

Zewdie Deksissa; Fessahaye Tesfamichael; Henok Ferede (2015)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the 2nd most frequent and top killer cancer among women in Ethiopia. Prevalence and factors associated with visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) positive result is not studied yet at the study area. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at Jimma model clinic of Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia, from September 11, 2013 to October 11, 2013. Pertinent data of 334 screened clients were transferred to Epidata version3.1 using checklist, dou...

Risk of incident active tuberculosis disease in patients treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: a population-based study

Chun-Wei Wu; Jiunn-Yih Wu; Meng-Tse Lee; Chih-Cheng Lai; I-Lin Wu; Yi-Wen Tsai; Shy-Shin Chang; Chien-Chang Lee (2017)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s most devastating public health threats. Our goal is to evaluate whether the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) affect the risk of new incident active TB disease. Methods We conducted a nested case-control analysis by using a 1 million longitudinally followed cohort, from Taiwan’s national health insurance research database. Effects of NSAIDs on active TB were estimated by conditional logistic regressi...

Transcriptomic response of the Antarctic pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica to ocean acidification

Kevin Johnson; Gretchen Hofmann (2017)
Publisher: Figshare
Abstract Background Ocean acidification (OA), a change in ocean chemistry due to the absorption of atmospheric CO2 into surface oceans, challenges biogenic calcification in many marine organisms. Ocean acidification is expected to rapidly progress in polar seas, with regions of the Southern Ocean expected to experience severe OA within decades. Biologically, the consequences of OA challenge calcification processes and impose an energetic cost. Results In order to better characterize the respo...

Mimicking electromagnetically induced transparency in the magneto-optical activity of magnetoplasmonic nanoresonators

G. Armelles; A. Cebollada; A. García-Martín; M. U. González; F. García; D. Meneses-Rodríguez; N. de Sousa; L. S. Froufe-Pérez (2013)
Publisher: Figshare
We show that the interaction between a plasmonic and a magnetoplasmonic metallic nanodisk leads to the appearance of magneto-optical activity in the purely plasmonic disk induced by the magnetoplasmonic one. Moreover, at specific wavelengths the interaction cancels the net electromagnetic field at the magnetoplasmonic component, strongly reducing the magneto-optical activity of the whole system. The MO activity has a characteristic Fano spectral shape, and the resulting MO inhibition constitu...
