Symplectic field theory and its applications

Eliashberg, Yakov (2006)
Publisher: Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT)
Symplectic field theory (SFT) attempts to approach the theory of holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds (also called Gromov-Witten theory) in the spirit of a topological field theory. This naturally leads to new algebraic structures which seems to have interesting applications and connections not only in symplectic geometry but also in other areas of mathematics, e.g. topology and integrable PDE. In this talk we sketch out the formal algebraic structure of SFT and discuss some current w...

On the Properties of Variational Approximations of Gibbs Posteriors

Alquier, Pierre (2016)
Publisher: Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS)
PAC-Bayesian bounds are useful tools to control the prediction risk of aggregated estimators. When dealing with the exponentially weightedaggregate (EWA), these bounds lead in some settings to the proof that the predictions are minimax-optimal. EWA is usually computed through Monte Carlo methods. However, in many practical applications, the computational cost of Monte Carlo methods is prohibitive. It is thus tempting to replace these by (faster) optimi...

Directed Evolution of Enantioselective Enzymes

Reetz, Manfred T.; Jerabek, Paul; Hegemann, Julian; Authmann, Andreas (2010)

Prof. Reetz (MPI Mühlheim) talks about the synthesis of enantionselective enzymes through the means of Directed Evolution.

Integral p-adic Hodge theory

Bhatt, Bhargav (2015)
Publisher: Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS)
I will describe joint work with M. Morrow and P. Scholze on the construction of a new integral cohomology theory for smooth projective schemes over the ring of integers of a p-adic field. The new theory realizes de Rham cohomology as a specialization of etale cohomology (integrally), and thus yields consequences about torsion by semicontinuity.

Solar Electric Motor On Superconducting Bearings - Vertical Configuration - 1350 Rpm

Berger, Kévin; Boufatah, Fawzi (2016)
Publisher: Zenodo
A solar electric motor that levitates on superconducting bearings has been designed and tested at the GREEN Laboratory. This video shows the start-up of the motor and the permanent regime that represents a speed around 1350 rpm, with a configuration of superconducting bearings called "vertical configuration". The difference from the video [10.5281/zenodo.154013] is that, the permanent magnet that acts as inductor has been placed in the optimal position.

Painful HIV-associated sensory neuropathy

Peter Kamerman (2016)
Publisher: Figshare
Painful HIV-associated sensory neuropathy. Presented at the 16th World Congress on Pain, Yokohama, Japan, 2015 (Workshop title: Neuropathic pain in infectious diseases; chair: ASC Rice, UK).  DOI: 10.6084/m9.figshare.3988914The presentation covers the epidemiology of painful HIV-associated sensory neuropathy. The analysis script (plots.R) and data (*.RData)used to generate some of the plots are included as supplementary files to the presentation.

Deformation and rigidity for group actions and von Neumann algebras

Popa, Sorin (2006)
Publisher: Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT)
We present some recent rigidity results for von Neumann algebras (II1 factors) and equivalence relations arising from measure preserving actions of groups on probability spaces which satisfy a combination of deformation and rigidity properties. This includes strong rigidity results for factors with calculation of their fundamental group and cocycle superrigidity for actions with applications to orbit equivalence ergodic theory.
