Morphogenesis in micrasterias

Lacalli, Thurston Castle (1973)
Publisher: University of British Columbia
The morphogenetic process responsible for elaboration of cell wall shape in dividing Micrasterias rotata cells is described and the associated ultrastructure discussed. The process is dissected experimentally into its contributing parts; laser microbeam studies reveal the growth sites responsible for morphogenesis, and autoradiography, the associated synthetic patterns. Tip growth similar to that occurring in fungal hypae, root hairs and pollen tubes makes a major contribution to cell sha...

Foraging strategy of the black oystercatcher

Hartwick, Earl Brian (1973)
Publisher: University of British Columbia
The study was concerned with the foraging strategies of animals and, in particular, with a recent model of optimal foraging proposed by Royama in 1970. The black oyster-catcher Haematopus bachmani Audubon was chosen as a study animal because it foraged in an open habitat where it was possible to observe both the hunting of the adult and the feeding of the young. Low survival rates resulting from predation and drowning indicated that efficiency in feeding would have survival value. A natural ...

The Energy dependence of the proton proton total cross-section for center-of-mass energies between 23 and 53 GeV

CERN ISR. THE TOTAL CROSS SECTION IS DEDUCED USING THE OPTICAL THEOREM WITH ALPHA = 0 (CONSISTENT WITH EXPERIMENT) AND BY EXTRAPOLATING TO T = 0 THE DIFFERENTIAL ELASTIC CROSS SECTION USING VALUES OF THE ELASTIC SLOPE FROM PREVIOUS MEASUREMENTS. THE VAN DER MEER METHOD IS USED FOR NORMALIZATION. THE TOTAL ELASTIC CROSS SECTION IS DEDUCED FROM THE EXTRAPOLATED FORWARD CROSS SECTION AND KNOWN VALUES OF THE SLOPE.
