A gradient-based optimisation scheme for optical tomography

Optical tomography schemes using non-linear optimisation are usually based on a Newton-like method involving the construction and inversion of a large Jacobian matrix. Although such matrices can be efficiently constructed using a reciprocity principle, their inversion is still computationally difficult. In this paper we demonstrate a simple means to obtain the gradient of the objective function directly, leading to straightforward application of gradient-based optimisation methods.

Quantum control by compensation of quantum fluctuations

We show that the influence of quantum fluctuations in the electromagnetic field vacuum on a two level atom can be measured and consequently compensated by balanced homodyne detection and a coherent feedback field. This compensation suppresses the decoherence associated with spontaneous emissions for a specific state of the atomic system allowing complete control of the coherent state of the system.

Measurement of the fraction of hadronic Z decays into charm quark pairs

CERN-LEP. Measurement of the fraction of hadronic Z0 decays (R_c) with charm quark pairs using a sample of 3.7 million hadronic decays collected between 1992 and 1995. R is determined by three methods, one using the inclusive electron spectrum and the other two using a double-tagging technique which is independent of the charm tagging efficiency. The average value is quoted here.
