CM values of regularized theta lifts

Ehlen, Stephan Jakob (2013)
In this thesis, special values of regularized theta lifts at complex multiplication (CM) points are studied. In particular, it is shown that CM values of Borcherds products can be expressed in terms of finitely many Fourier coefficients of certain harmonic weak Maass forms of weight one. As it turns out, these coefficients are logarithms of algebraic integers whose prime ideal factorization is determined by cycles on an arithmetic curve that parametrize special endomorphisms of CM elliptic cu...

Integrating Printed and Digital Documents: Interaction Models and Techniques for Collaborative Knowledge Work

Steimle, Jürgen (2009)
Today's knowledge work is characterized by the simultaneous use of paper and digital documents. This implies disruptive transitions from paper to digital media and vice versa, particularly because interaction techniques differ in the two worlds. For instance, traditional references are created and followed differently than digital hyperlinks. This thesis advances the integration of paper and digital documents. It contributes empirically-grounded conceptual work in the fields of interaction th...

Studies on Boron-Carbon-Nitrides (B-C-N) Leading to the Discovery of the Novel Boron Oxynitride B6N4O3

Bhat, Shrikant (2016)
The present thesis deals with studies on boron-carbon-nitrides (B-C-N) and with the discovery of a novel boron oxynitride (B-O-N) phase. Polymer-derived amorphous B-C-N compounds are studied under high-pressure and high temperature (HP-HT) conditions in order to investigate the formability of crystalline ternary B-C-N phases. Furthermore, the potential capability of amorphous B-C-N compounds for their electrochemical performance as promising anode materials for Li-ion battery (LIB) is evaluat...

Organic farming and generalist predator communities

Birkhofer, Klaus (2007)
Organic farming systems rely on improved soil quality and biological control favored by reduced tillage and pesticide application, organic fertilizer application and crop rotation management. The first part of this study focused on the impact of organic and conventional long-term farming (DOK Trial, Switzerland), primarily characterized by fertilizer types, on major aboveground generalist predator taxa (spiders, rove beetles and ground beetles) in structurally simple (winter wheat) and comple...

Allometry – Relations to Energy and Abundance

Ehnes, Roswitha (2014)
During my PhD, I focused on metabolic rates of litter- and soil-dwelling invertebrates, parameters that exert influence on them or are influenced by metabolism. I started with consumption experi- ments, comparing the estimated amounts of energy taken up with the energetic demand estimated via metabolic-rate measurements. These experiments showed that, generally, ingestion as well as metabolic rates increase for beetle and spider species with increasing temperature. However, whi...

Improving Quality of Service in Wireless Sensor Networks for Industrial Automation

Yuan, Dingwen (2016)
Monitoring and control systems have played a central role in industry and everyday life, often in a non-intrusive manner. Yet, they will become more ubiquitous, autonomous and distributed, with the rapid development of the envisioned technologies of "smart homes", "smart cities" and "industry 4.0". All these new technologies are built upon the enabling technology of WSN. Their success depends to a large extent on the communication capability of WSNs. Fast reaction and feedback is a common cha...

Development of an automatic, multidimensional, multicriterial optimization algorithm for the calibration of internal combustion engines

Burggraf, Timo (2015)
The process of engine application is crucial for the fulfillment of exhaust emission limits and for the reduction of fossil fuel consumption. During the past decade, this process became more and more complex, consequently the test bench measurement times become longer and even more expensive. Commercial software tools try to deliver good application methods, that reduce the total application time and application costs. In this work an alternative holistic optimization approach based on intege...
