The Interaction of Entropy Fluctuations with Turbine Blade Rows; A Mechanism of Turbojet Engine Noise

Cumpsty, N. A.; Marble, F. E. (1977)
The theory relating to the interaction of entropy fluctuations ('hot spots'), as well as vorticity and pressure, with blade rows is described. A basic feature of the model is that the blade rows have blades of sufficiently short chord that this is negligible in comparison with the wavelength of the disturbances. For the interaction of entropy with a blade row to be important, it is essential that the steady pressure change across the blade row should be large, although all unsteady perturbati...

Theory of time-dependent propagation in multimode lightguides

Crosignani, Bruno; Papas, Charles H.; Di Porto, Paolo (1977)
A coupled system of equations governing the propagation of a signal in a statistical ensemble of multimode optical fibers is presented. It describes, besides the usual average modal powers, the evolution of the interference terms between the mode amplitudes and of the modal power fluctuations. Our procedure allows us to treat the general nonstationary nonmonochromatic case of an arbitrary signal fed into the lightguide by a source possessing a finite spectral bandwidth. The introduction of mo...

Voters, Bureaucrats and Legislators

Fiorina, Morris P.; Noll, Roger G. (1977)
The claim that government is excessively bureaucratic can be interpreted as an assertion about inefficient factor proportions in the production of public goods. The rational choice theory of electoral competition is extended in this paper to include the election of representatives from separate districts, ombudsman activities by legislators, self-interested bureaucrats and production functions for public activities that have bureaucratic and nonbureaucratic arguments. If the demand for public...

The April 29, 1965, Puget Sound earthquake and the crustal and upper mantle structure of western Washington

Langston, Charles A.; Blum, David E. (1977)
Simultaneous modeling of source parameters and local layered earth structure for the April 29, 1965, Puget Sound earthquake was done using both ray and layer matrix formulations for point dislocations imbedded in layered media. The source parameters obtained are: dip 70° to the east, strike 344°, rake −75°, 63 km depth, average moment of 1.4 ± 0.6 × 10^(26) dyne-cm, and a triangular time function with a rise time of 0.5 sec and falloff of 2.5 sec. An upper mantle and crustal model for souther...

Some notes on regional history research.

Henning, C G (1977)
• Summary: Although rich in regional history South Africa c...

Rubidium-Strontium Fractionation Domains in the Peninsular Ranges Batholith and Their Implications for Magmatic Arc Evolution

Silver, Leon T.; Early, Thomas O. (1977)
The northern 600 km of this Cretaceous batholith, comprised of hundreds of diverse plutons, appears to consist of 12-15 domains. Each domain is a region where rocks of all types (within our limited sampling) show a regular linear covariation of Rb and Sr concentrations. This regularity displays different concentration levels and a different slope and is accompanied by a distinct set of isotopic systematics in each domain. The domains do not disrupt the remarkable zonation of init...

Highly collimated broadside emission from room-temperature GaAs distributed Bragg reflector lasers

Ng, W.; Yariv, A. (1977)
Highly collimated laser beams have been observed to be coupled out by second-order Bragg scattering from GaAs distributed Bragg reflector lasers. The beams are perpendicular to the waveguide plane and have an angular width of less than 1°. The diodes have a separate confinement structure and operate at room temperature with thresholds as low as 1.4 kA/cm^2.

Use of ion beams in space

Mayer, James W.; Kullen, R. Philip; Nicolet, Marc A.; Purser, Kenneth H. (1977)
Ion beams of MeV energy are in routine use as depth microscopes to determine composition and impurity profiles with depth resolutions of 100-300 Å over near-surface regions. Backscattering spectrometry with He ions and proton-induced x-rays are simple to implement. These techniques have been used in studies of thin-film reactions, solid-phase epitaxy, metallurgy of integrated circuits and solar cells, oxidation and corrosion, and other near-surface phenomena. The Spacelab orbital environment ...

Measurement of electron screening in muonic lead

Vogel, P.; Zehnder, A.; Carter, A. L.; Dixit, M. S.; Hincks, E. P.; Kessler, D.; Wadden, J. S.; Hargrove, C. K.; McKee, R. J.; Mes, H.; Anderson, H. L. (1977)
Energies of the transitions between high-lying (n≥6) states of muonic lead were accurately determined. The results are interpreted as a ∼2% test of the electron screening. The agreement between experiment and theory is good if it is assumed that the refilling of the electron K shell is fast. The present results furthermore severely restrict possible ionization of the electron L shell.

Mathematical model for multiple cooling tower plumes

Wu, Frank H. Y.; Koh, Robert C. Y. (1977)
A mathematical model is developed resulting in a computer program for the prediction of the behavior of plumes from multiple cooling towers with multiple cells. A general integral method based on the conservation of mass, momentum, energy (heat), and moisture fluxes (before and after plume merging), were employed in the prediction scheme. The effects of ambient stratifications of temperature, moisture, and wind are incorporated in the model. An axisymmetric round plume is assumed to be e...
