  • External Thermal Insulation of Buildings with Expanded Polystyrene

    Florea, Vitalie (2012)
External thermal insulation of the dwelling walls increasingly interests in the past years due to the tendency to lower the energy consumption both at global and national levels. In Romania it is known that most of the houses built before 90s showed and continue to show a low level of thermal insulation due to the use of materials characterized by increased heat losses and scarce thermal calculation available at that time. These heat losses exert a direct impact and general energy consumption...

Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings Toward NZEB. Possibilities and Constraints

Pescaru, Radu Aurel; Baran, Irina; Dumitrescu, Laura (2014)
Energy efficiency is one of the main targets of Europe 2020 Strategy. As buildings account for approximately 40% of final energy consumption, investing in measures in buildings can yield substantial energy savings. In this context, public buildings must be an example for the measures taken in order to decrease the energy consumption. More than that, European Directive 31/2010 states that all new public buildings after 31 December 2018 bust be “nearly zero energy buildings”. This paper present...

Modern Approaches on the Optimization of Composite Structures

Axinte, Andrei; Bejan, Liliana; Ţăranu, Nicolae; Ciobanu, Paul (2013)
A laminated fibre reinforced composite structure is usually tailored, according to the design objectives, by choosing the individual constituents and of their volume fractions, the fiber orientation, the laminae thicknesses and orientation of the plies, their number and stacking sequences, as well as the fabrication procedure. To achieve the best results, optimization techniques have been developed. In recent years, some optimization methods, that are conceptually different from the traditio...

Gypsum Board Thermal Properties Exposed to High Temperature and Fire Condition

    Mydin, Azree Othuman (2012)
Gypsum board is a widespread fire barrier used in house and general building construction. Gypsum board partitions and ceiling membranes are possibly the most common fire resistant construction approach employed in an extensive range of building types. The utilization of gypsum board as prime fire protection of light-flame wood or steel construction is ubiquitous. Gypsum board based systems are among those now broadly used, as walls or ceilings and it is principally employed as lining materia...

Laboratory Measurements of Wind Velocity Field Behind Windbreak Screens

Pescaru, Radu-Aurel; Akileh, Hasan Ali Ahmed; Radu, Adrian (2011)
Often tall buildings and other large constructions affect unfavourably the wind comfort conditions at pedestrian level on the adjacent areas. In their attempt to ameliorate these negative effects of wind action, urban professionals use for some cases flat-type protection systems. This paper presents some data on the characteristics and effectiveness of such windbreak screens, resulting from the study of physical models in wind tunnel located in turbulent boundary layer.
