  • Modern Approaches on the Optimization of Composite Structures

A laminated fibre reinforced composite structure is usually tailored, according to the design objectives, by choosing the individual constituents and of their volume fractions, the fiber orientation, the laminae thicknesses and orientation of the plies, their number and stacking sequences, as well as the fabrication procedure. To achieve the best results, optimization techniques have been developed. In recent years, some optimization methods, that are conceptually different from the traditio...

Gypsum Board Thermal Properties Exposed to High Temperature and Fire Condition

Gypsum board is a widespread fire barrier used in house and general building construction. Gypsum board partitions and ceiling membranes are possibly the most common fire resistant construction approach employed in an extensive range of building types. The utilization of gypsum board as prime fire protection of light-flame wood or steel construction is ubiquitous. Gypsum board based systems are among those now broadly used, as walls or ceilings and it is principally employed as lining materia...

Seismic Isolating Systems. Classification, Properties and Utilization

Flexible buildings can produce excessive vibration due to wind action, thus affecting the comfort of residents but also the structural system. To ensure the functional performance of the flexible structure have been adopted several solutions (flexible structures driven by wind and earthquake re-quire dampers) while those driven only by the earthquake are rigid and require base isolation systems. An overview of measures to reduce structural response including a discussion of auxiliary damping ...

The Bridges of Iaşi. Aesthetic Aspects

This paper highlights some aesthetic aspects of bridges from Iasi, with the presentation of technical data and photos. The main issue is the placement of buildings near the bridge and blocked their view. Thus, the aesthetic character of the bridge, which is of particular importance in certain cases, there is not rendered valuable. The same problem occurs if adjacent locations of several bridges (usually two), they obstruct each other.

Numerical Investigation of Progressive Collapse Resistance for Seismically Designed RC Buildings

In this paper the progressive collapse behavior of a reinforced concrete framed building located in different seismic areas from Romania is investigated. The six-storey structure is designed for low (ag = 0.08 g), moderate (ag = 0.16 g) and high (ag = 0.24 g) seismic zone. Based on the GSA (2003) criteria, a nonlinear static analysis is conducted first in order to estimate the progressive collapse resistance of the models. It was shown that all the structures will collapse when subjected to i...
