  • Issues in the design of switched linear control systems: A benchmark study

In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application...

Efficient Semiparametric Estimation of the Fama–French Model and Extensions

This paper develops a new estimation procedure for characteristic-based factor models of stock returns. We treat the factor model as a weighted additive nonparametric regression model, with the factor returns serving as time-varying weights and a set of univariate nonparametric functions relating security characteristic to the associated factor betas. We use a time-series and cross-sectional pooled weighted additive nonparametric regression methodology to simultaneously estimat...

Genetic Repair Strategies inspired by Arabidopsis thaliana

Recent advances in genetics controversially suggest that the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana performs genetic repair using genetic information that originates in the individual's grandparent generation. We apply this ancestral genetic repair strategy within an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) to solve a constraint based optimisation problem. Re- sults indicate that the grandparent based genetic repair strategy out- performs the parent alternative. Within this framework, we inves...

Luminescence spectroscopy of matrix-isolated atomic manganese: Excitation of the "forbidden" a6DJ-a6S transitions

Laser-induced excitation spectra recorded for the electric-quadrupole 3d64s a6DJ-3d54s2a6S5/2 transitions of atomic Mn, allow assignment of the red emission features, previously observed in Mn/RG RG=Ar, Kr and Xe matrices with resonance 3d54s4pz6P52/3d54s2 a6S5/2 excitation, to the metastable a6D9/2 state. Narrow excitation bands recorded for the red site in the Mn/Kr system allow identification of all five spin-orbit levels J=1/2, 3/2, 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2 in the a6D state. The coincidence...

Why Our Next President May Keep His or Her Senate Seat: A Conjecture on the Constitution's Incompatibility Clause

In a few months, We the People will go to the polls and elect the electors who will elect (or, at least, have an opportunity to elect) the next President of the United States. Short of an act of God or an act of war, it is more likely than not that the next President will be a sitting United States Senator. The expectation is that a Senator/President-elect resigns his or her legislative seat some time prior taking the presidential oath of office. It is widely believed in large and influential...
