  • Bioremediation of PCB-contaminated marine sediments: From identification of indigenous dehalorespirers to enhancement of microbial reductive dechlorination

Marine sediments are the main accumulation reservoir of organic recalcitrant pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In the anoxic conditions typical of these sediments, anaerobic bacteria of the phylum Chloroflexi are able to attack these compounds in a process called microbial reductive dechlorination. Such activity and members of this phylum were detected in PCB-impacted sediments of the Venice Lagoon. The aim of this work was to investigate microbial reductive dechlorination...

A tracking detector to study O(1 GeV) ν μ CC interactions

A novel spectrometer to search for sterile neutrino with a short baseline νμ beam was proposed. The detector includes a tracking system composed of planes of triangular shape scintillator strips (3.3 cm × 1.7 cm ) coupled to Silicon PhotoMultipliers in analog mode readout. A spatial resolution of O(1 mm) is required for the determination of charge sign of muons produced in νμ CC interactions at few GeV energy scale. The tracking detector was tested with cosmic rays and particle beams at CERN...

Fundamental Dimensions of Social Judgment: Sociability and Morality as Distinct Characteristics of Social Warmth

The present dissertation focuses on the two basic dimensions of social judgment, i.e., warmth and competence. Previous research has shown that warmth and competence emerge as fundamental dimensions both at the interpersonal level and at the group level. Moreover, warmth judgments appear to be primary, reflecting the importance of first assessing others’ intentions before determining the other’s ability to carry out those intentions. Finally, it has been shown that warmth and competence judgme...
