Provitamins and vitamins D2 and D3 in Cladina spp. over a latitudinal gradient: possible correlation with UV levels

Provitamin D2, vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 were identified in the thallus of a lichen species, Cladina arbuscula (Wallr.) Hale and W.L. Culb. The identification of vitamin D3 was supported by: (1) co-chromatography in both reverse and straight phase HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), (2) ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and (3) molecular ion peaks demonstrated by ESI (electrospray ionisation) mass spectrometry. The contents of vitamin D3 range from 0.67 to 2.04 g g−1 dry matter in t...

Neuroretinal xenotransplantation to immunocompetent hosts in a discordant species combination.

In spite of its immune privileged state, xenotransplantation within the CNS is associated with rapid graft destruction in immunocompetent hosts. Efforts to enhance graft survival have mostly focused on host immune response, whereas relatively little attention has been paid to donor tissue characteristics. In the present paper, we explore long-term survival of xenogeneic full-thickness neuroretinal transplants in immunocompetent hosts and investigate the significance of tissue integrity in rel...

Increased photoreactivity of DOC by acidification: Implications for the carbon cycle in humic lakes

Effects of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation and acidification on pelagic carbon flux in a humic lake (dissolved organic carbon [DOC] similar to15 mg C L-1) were studied in a mesocosm experiment during the summer of 2000. Triplicate tanks (107 liters volume, 1 m high) were exposed to natural solar radiation, a daily extra dose of UV-B radiation, or kept dark. One set of tanks was submitted to a decrease in pH (from 5.7 to 4.7), and one set was kept at the natural pH level. During 70 d, water sampl...

Sites and the mental landscape : Stone Age in the Kullen district, North-western Scania, Sweden

Abstract in Undetermined The approach of the mental landscape enlarges the perspectives for interpreting sites and settle- ments. In the Kullen district sites and settlements is theorized by breaking down the dichotomi- es of Mesolithic and Neolithic and the archaeologically constructed borderline between the periods. The terminology and the interpretation of site and settlement need to be extended by including the materiality of landscape, and the long-term utilization independent of presume...
