  • A thermodynamical model for rainfall-triggered volcanic dome collapse

    Matthews, AJ; Barclay, J (2004)
Dome-forming volcanic eruptions typically involve the slow extrusion of viscous lava onto a steep-sided volcano punctuated by collapse and the generation of hazardous pyroclastic flows. We show an unequivocal link between the onset of intense rainfall and lava dome collapse on short time scales (within a few hours) and develop a simple thermodynamical model to explain this behavior. The model is forced with rainfall observations from the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, and suggests that ...

Is foreign direct investment good for health in low and middle income countries? An instrumental variable approach

Burns, Darren K.; Jones, Andrew P.; Goryakin, Yevgeniy; Suhrcke, Marc (2017)
This paper investigates the relationship between overall foreign direct investment (FDI) and population health in low and middle income countries (LMICs) using annual panel data from 85 LMICs between 1974 and 2012. When controlling for time trends, country fixed effects, correlation between repeated observations, relevant covariates, and endogeneity via a novel instrumental variable approach, we find FDI to have a beneficial effect to overall health, proxied by life expectancy, in LMICs. When...

    A π-Extended Donor-Acceptor-Donor Triphenylene Twin linked via a Pyrazine-bridge

Xiao, Weikang; He, Zhiqun; Remiro Buenamanana, Sonia; Turner, Rebecca; Xu, M.; Yang, Xiao; Jing, X; Cammidge, Andy (2015)
Beta-amino triphenylenes can be accessed via palladium catalyzed amination of the corresponding triflate using benzophe-none imine. Transformation of amine 6 to benzoyl amide 18 is also straightforward and its wide mesophase range demon-strates that the new linkage supports columnar liquid crystal formation. Amine 6 also undergoes clean aerobic oxidation to give a new twinned structure linked through an electron-poor pyrazine ring. The new discotic liquid crystal motif contains donor and acce...

Crowd-sourced data and its applications for new algorithms in photographic imaging

    Harris, Michael (2015)
This thesis comprises two main themes. The first of these is concerned primarily with the validity and utility of data acquired from web-based psychophysical experiments. In recent years web-based experiments, and the crowd-sourced data they can deliver, have been rising in popularity among the research community for several key reasons – primarily ease of administration and easy access to a large population of diverse participants. However, the level of control with which traditional expe...
