  • Salvaging the big society: A ten-point plan

The Big Society is one of the major unifying themes of Britian's Coalition Governemnt.  The authors of this paper argue that the overall concept is not widely understood, even amongst inhabitants of the Westminster village, and this has led various commentators, prematurely in the view of teh authors, to write the Big Society's obiturary.

Determination and Applications of Environmental Costs at Different Sized Airports – Aircraft Noise and Engine Emissions.

With the increasing trend of charging for externalities and the aim of encouraging the sustainable development of the air transport industry, there is a need to evaluate the social costs of these undesirable side effects, mainly aircraft noise and engine emissions, for different airports. The aircraft noise and engine emissions social costs are calculated in monetary terms for five different sized airports, ranging from hub airports to small regional airports. The number of residences within ...

Automated Retrieval of Non-Engineering Domain Solutions to Engineering Problems

Biological inspiration for engineering design has occurred through a variety of techniques such as creation and use of databases, keyword searches of biological information in natural-language format, prior knowledge of biology, and chance observations of nature. This research focuses on utilizing the reconciled Functional Basis function and flow terms to identify suitable biological inspiration for function based design. The organized search provides two levels of results: (1) as...

Toward gas-phase controlled mass transfer in micro-porous membrane contactors for recovery and concentration of dissolved methane in the gas phase

A micro-porous hollow fibre membrane contactor (HFMC) operated in sweep-gas mode has been studied to enable the recovery of dissolved methane from water in concentrated form. At high sweep-gas flow rates, up to 97% dissolved methane removal efficiency is achievable which is sufficient to achieve carbon neutrality (around 88%). An increase in methane composition of the recovered sweep-gas was achievable through two primary mechanisms: (i) an increase in liquid velocity which improved dissolved...

The biochemistry and physiology of poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate metabolism in methylosinus trichosporium OB3b

The obligate methanotroph, Methylosinus trichosporium 0B3b synthesised up to 20 % of its dry weight as poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate when grown in batch culture or nitrogen limited continuous culture on a methanol/ammonium salts medium. Four soluble enzymes associated with polymer metabolism, D(-)-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (3-HBD), acetoacetyl-CoA synthetase, beta-ketothiolase and acetoacetyl-CoA reductase have been purified from the crude extract of this organism. Deta...
