  • Earthquake Sequence 1973–1996 in Bárðarbunga Volcano: Seismic Activity Leading up to Eruptions in the NW-Vatnajökull Area

    Bjarnason, Ingi Þorleifur (2014)
A day and a half after the earthquake (mb=5.3, MS=5.6, MW=5.6) in the Bárðarbunga central volcano on Sept. 29th 1996, a volcanic eruption broke out under the Vatnajökull glacier. The eruption was located approximately 20 km SSE of the earthquake epicenter, midway between the Bárðarbunga and Grímsvötn central volcanoes. Course of events suggests a connection between earthquake and eruption and therefore a connection with a sequence of earthquakes of the same characteristics in Bárð...

A Stepwise Analytical Projected Gradient Descent Search for Hyperspectral Unmixing and Its Code Vectorization

Kizel, Fadi; Shoshany, Maxim; Netanyahu, Nathan S.; Even-Tzur, Gilad; Benediktsson, Jon Atli (2017)
We present, in this paper, a new methodology for spectral unmixing, where a vector of fractions, corresponding to a set of endmembers (EMs), is estimated for each pixel in the image. The process first provides an initial estimate of the fraction vector, followed by an iterative procedure that converges to an optimal solution. Specifically, projected gradient descent (PGD) optimization is applied to (a variant of) the spectral angle mapper objective function, so as to significantly reduce the ...

Adverse drug reactions of antipsychotic drug treatment – how to balance evidence and values in relation to the use of clozapine in treatment-resistant schizophrenia

    Ingimarsson, Oddur (2018)
Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic serious mental disorder with prevalence close to 0.7%. Early symptoms of schizophrenia generally appear in late adolescence or the early twenties. The prognosis is usually worse in cases of early onset. The symptomatology of schizophrenia is complex and can vary a lot between individuals. The two main symptom dimensions are referred to as positive symptoms and negative symptoms. The most common positive symptoms are: hallucinations, particularly au...

The interaction of the knowledge society and rural development in Iceland and Scotland

    Edvardsdóttir, Anna Guðrún (2016)
The expansion of the knowledge society became a regional policy issue in Iceland and Scotland in the 1990s. Attention was increasingly paid to the development of the knowledge society in rural areas, especially higher education and research activities. Today, in all Iceland’s regional areas there is a university center and/or research institutes, operating as independent institutes or as a part of bigger institutes based in the Reykjavík area. Similar development has taken place in rural area...

Conformational properties of 1-cyano-1-silacyclohexane, C5H10SiHCN: Gas electron diffraction, low-temperature NMR and quantum chemical calculations

Belyakov, Alexander V.; Sigolaev, Yrii F.; Shlykov, Sergey A.; Wallevik, Sunna Ó.; Jónsdóttir, Nanna R.; Jónsdóttir, Sigríður; Kvaran, Agust; Bjornsson, Ragnar; Árnason, Ingvar (2017)
The conformational preference of the cyano group of the 1-cyano-1-silacyclohexane was studied experimentally by means of gas electron diffraction (GED) and dynamic nuclear magnetic resonance (DNMR) as well as by quantum chemical (QC) calculations applying high-level coupled cluster methods as well as DFT methods. According to the GED experiment, the compound exists in the gas-phase as a mixture of two conformers possessing the chair conformation of the six-membered ring and Cs symmetry while ...
