  • The surface energy balance of early summer land-fast sea ice in Atka Bay, Antarctica

Paul, Stephan; Drüe, Clemens; Hoppmann, Mario; Hunkeler, Priska; Heinemann, Günther; Willmes, Sascha (2014)
In-situ measurements of the land-fast sea ice energy balance are scarce. We present a data set that comprises eddy-covariance measurements of sensible and latent heat as well as measurements of the sea-ice temperature gradient, long-wave and short-wave radiation measurements over land-fast sea ice in Atka Bay, Antarctica. With this setup we are able to monitor all components of the sea-ice energy budget. Additionally, we also measured the turbulent flux of CO2 over sea ice. This 37 day-long d...

A stratigraphical-sedimentological study of the last interglacial period in the central Nordic seas on the basis of XRF core scanning

Kolling, Henriette; Bauch, Henning A. (2017)
The recognition of specific geological time intervals is one of the major issues when establishing the stratigraphies of marine sediment cores. The automatic XRF core scanning method provides a fast and non-destructive method to precisely identify a given time interval and its changeable sedimentation histories. To test the applicability of XRF core scanning to recognize such periods, we studied in detail sedimentation processes across the last interglacial climate cycle (MI...

Diversity in planktonic communities: an experimental test of the intertmediate disturbance hypothesis

    Flöder, Sabine; Sommer, Ulrich (1999)
According to Connells intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH), diversity within a community is maximal at intermediate frequencies and intensities of disturbances. In order to test the IDH, disturbances of different frequencies and intensities were imposed on natural plankton communities in controlled field experiments. These disturbances consisted of an artificial deepening of the mixed layer, leading to the dilution of epilimnetic populations and to a higher level of nutrients. Intervals...
  • Video of a plankton community enclosed in a “Kiel Off-Shore Mesocosm for future Ocean Simulations” (KOSMOS) during a study in Tvärminne Storfjärden (Finland) 2012

Boxhammer, Tim; Sswat, Michael; Paul, Allanah J.; Nicolai, Maike; Riebesell, Ulf (2015)
    Projects: EC | MESOAQUA (228224)
In June 2012 we deployed six 19 m long KOSMOS units for 8 weeks in the Tvärminne Storfjärden (59° 51.5’ N, 23° 15.5’ E), an open archipelago area on the south-west corner of Finland, in order to study the influence of ocean acidification on the succession of a plankton community under in-situ conditions in the Baltic Sea. At the beginning of the study (18th of June), we mounted an underwater camera on a diving torch and slowly lowered this setup to a depth of approximately 18.5 m. The video d...

Performance of herring larvae in a simulated future ocean food web, using the "Kiel Off-Shore Mesocosms for future Ocean Simulations"

Sswat, Michael; Boxhammer, Tim; Jutfelt, F.; Clemmesen, Catriona; Riebesell, Ulf (2016)
    Publisher: GEOMAR
We studied the combined direct physiological and indirect food web effects of ocean acidification on herring larvae inside pelagic mesocosms. A natural plankton community of the Gullmarsfjord, Sweden was enclosed in the Kiel Off-Shore Mesocosms for future Ocean Simulations (KOSMOS) for 113 days from March to June 2013 at ambient and projected end-of-the-century CO2 levels (~760 µatm pCO2). Herring eggs were introduced into the mesocosms, where they hatched in mid of May. The larvae developed ...
