  • Oxyanion and tetrahedral intermediate stabilization by subtilisin : detection of a new tetrahedral adduct

The peptide-derived glyoxal inhibitor Z-Ala-Ala-Phe-glyoxal has been shown to be ~10 fold more effective as an inhibitor of subtilisin than Z-Ala-Pro-Phe-glyoxal. Signals at 107.2 p.p.m. and 200.5 p.p.m. are observed for the glyoxal keto and aldehyde carbons of the inhibitor bound to subtilisin, showing that the glyoxal keto and aldehyde carbons are sp3 and sp2 hybridized respectively. The signal at 107.2 p.p.m. from the carbon atom attached to the hemiketal oxyanion is formed in a slow exch...

Establishment of diagnostic reference levels for CT trunk examinations in the Western region of Saudi Arabia

Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are an important optimisation tool, which aid in identifying abnormally high dose levels. These are currently not available in Saudi Arabia, and this research aims to remedy this. CT dose data (DLP and CTDIvol) were collected for a minimum number of 10 adult patients of average size (60–80 kg) presenting for a range of CT examinations from public hospitals in the western region of Saudi Arabia. These include routine chest, high-resolution chest (HRCT), pulmo...

Demonstrating social search a la HeyStaks

For all the success of mainstream search engines there are a number of opportunities for improving on the conventional Web search user experience. In this short paper we consider the default assumption that search is solitary in nature, an isolated interaction between individual user and search engine. We highlight the value of a more collaborative approach to Web search and briefy present a novel add-on for mainstream search engines: HeyStaks (www.heystaks.com). It is designed to provide a m...

Large-scale, linked drainage systems in the NW European Triassic: insights from the Pb isotopic composition of detrital K-feldspar

Pb isotopic data from K-feldspars in Middle Triassic (Anisian) sandstones in the Wessex Basin, onshore southwest UK, and the East Irish Sea Basin, some to the north, show that the same grain populations are present. This indicates that the drainage system (the “Budleighensis” River) feeding these basins originated from the same source/s, most probably the remnant Variscan Uplands to the south. Fluvial and aeolian sandstones have the same provenance, suggesting that if water- and wind-driven ...

The Use of Inertial Sensors for the Classification of Rehabilitation Exercises

The benefits of exercise in rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery or following a musculoskeletal injury has been widely established. Within a hospital or clinical environment, adherence levels to rehabilitation exercise programs are high due to the supervision of the patient during the rehabilitation process. However, adherence levels drop significantly when patients are asked to perform the program at home. This paper describes the use of simple inertial sensors for the purpose of develop...
