  • Problems with claims that sanctity leads to 'pro-life' law, and reasons for doubting it to be a convincing 'middle way'

This paper focuses on the idea of pro-life arguments and the sanctity of life doctrine in the context of debates on end-of-life law. Advocates of the sanctity doctrine are often thought of as being pro-life, which has potentially troublesome implications in policy debate. I explore what it means to be pro-life, and consider sanctity's relation to this. I question the coherence and appeal of truly pro-life law, and law that is premised on the sanctity doctrine. The analysis allows me to examin...

Moving Slowly up the Ladder of Political Engagement: A ‘Spill-over’ Model of Internet Participation

In this study we test whether a range of online political activities undertaken during the campaign affect the propensity to engage in non-electoral types of online and offline political engagement subsequently. We develop three hypotheses accounting for this linkage based on a ‘spill-over’ logic about (1) the effort required for the action; (2) the type of activity undertaken (formal versus informal); and (3) the medium on which the action occurs (online or offline). We test our hypotheses w...

Good vibrations: Human interval timing in the vibrotactile modality

This article reports a detailed examination of timing in the vibrotactile modality and comparison with that of visual and auditory modalities. Three experiments investigated human timing in the vibrotactile modality. In Experiment 1, a staircase threshold procedure with a standard duration of 1,000ms revealed a difference threshold of 160.35ms for vibrotactile stimuli, which was significantly higher than that for auditory stimuli (103.25ms) but not significantly lower than that obtained for v...

Influence of gas phase equilibria on the chemical vapor deposition of graphene

We have investigated the influence of gas phase chemistry on the chemical vapor deposition of graphene in a hot wall reactor. A new extended parameter space for graphene growth was defined through literature review and experimentation at low pressures (≥0.001 mbar). The deposited films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and dark field optical microscopy, with the latter showing promise as a rapid and nondestructive characterization technique for graphene f...

From offender to situation: The 'cold' approach to sexual violence prevention?

Many commentators have pointed to the monstrous nature of sexual violence, with its related sense of pollution and disgust. In response, post-release regulation has a 'hot' quality: in the USA, sexually violent predator statutes, residency requirements, GPS satellite monitoring, and variations on the theme of community notification all speak of the expressiveness of the response. 'Hot' signifies and has embedded within it an 'individualist' rather than 'structural' account of action, emphasis...
