  • MEMS-driven flexible filters for cognitive radio

Carey-Smith, BE; Warr, PA; Beach, MA (2005)
This paper describes a discretely tunable filter topology based on lumped-distributed coupled transmission-lines, particularly suitable for micro-electro-mechanical systems switching devices. This topology is capable of simultaneous wideband centre-frequency and bandwidth tuning. Low fractional bandwidths can be achieved without the need for large coupled-line spacings due to the anti-phase relationship of the lumped capacitive and distributed electro-magnetic coupling coefficients. Both simu...

Effect of gate shaping and consequent process changes on AlGaN/GaN HEMT reliability

Moereke, Janina; Tapajna, Milan; Uren, Michael J; Pei, Yi; Mishra, Umesh; Kuball, Martin H H (2012)
The effect of gate shape and its necessary fabrication process on the reliability of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT) was studied on devices fabricated on the same wafer, using DC and pulsed HEMT analysis. Simulations were used to determine the difference in electric field on the surface and in the barrier for the three gate shapes studied, I-shaped, slanted, and recessed slanted. Prior to each electrical characterization during stress, devices were exposed to ultraviolet i...

Reviewing peer review, an eye tracking experiment of review behaviour

    Boa, Duncan; Hicks, Ben (2015)
The quality of peer reviews is a longstanding issue within the Design Society with concerns over the consistency and transparency of reviews raised frequently. Previous research has sought to qualify these concerns by describing the variability of review scores and correlating them with academic s backgrounds. This paper aims to update and advance the current understanding of peer review within the Design Society by characterising review behaviour through the addition of eye tracking. Sevente...

Sensitivity analysis for the effects of multiple unmeasured confounders

Groenwold, Rolf; Sterne, Jonathan; Lawlor, Debbie; Moons, K. G M; Hoes, A. W.; Tilling, Kate (2016)
Purpose: Observational studies are prone to (unmeasured) confounding. Sensitivity analysis of unmeasured confounding typically focus on a single unmeasured confounder. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of multiple (possibly weak) unmeasured confounders. Methods: Simulation studies were performed based on parameters estimated from the British Women’s Heart and Health Study, including 28 measured confounders and assuming no effect of ascorbic acid intake on mortality. In additio...

Multi-standard reconfigurable motion estimation processor for hybrid video codecs

    Nunez-Yanez, JL; Spiteri, Trevor; Vafiadis, G (2011)
This study presents a programmable and configurable motion estimation (ME) processor capable of performing ME across several state-of-the-art video codecs that include multiple tools to improve the accuracy of the calculated motion vectors. The core can be programmed using a C-style syntax optimised to implement arbitrary block matching algorithms and configured with different execution units depending on the selected codec, the available inter-coding options and required performance. This fl...
