  • Subject Lines As Sensors:Co-Word Analysis Of Email To Support The Management Of Collaborative Engineering Work

This paper presents a topic-based analysis of email subject line data from a large-scale engineering project and explores its utility for supporting the management of collaborative work. The main contributions of the paper are a novel interpretation of the co-word network analysis method for application within an engineering project management context, and the appraisal of the method for d=finding patterns within subject line data. Our findings suggest that the approach has the potential to c...

    Perceptual Image Fusion Using Wavelets

A perceptual image fusion method is proposed that employs explicit luminance and contrast masking models. These models are combined to give the perceptual importance of each coefficient produced by the dual-tree complex wavelet transform of each input image. This combined model of perceptual importance is used to select which coefficients are retained and furthermore to determine how to present the retained information in the most effective way. This paper is the first to give a principled ap...

Lesbians, gay men and the production of scale in East Germany

This article uses the concept of ‘scale’ to analyse the relative importance of local, national and global places, events, and explanatory frameworks in everyday lives in late communism. It uses a case study of lesbians and gay men living in East Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s, and asks how these groups negotiated the restrictions of life under state socialism. It argues that both individuals and groups used scale in two ways: as an imaginative tool for making sense of the world, and as a polit...

The crystallographic structure of the air-grown oxide on depleted uranium metal

Oxide formation on depleted uranium metal was investigated using a combination of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterisation. Diffraction analysis of the oxide revealed an FCC crystalline formation of UO2 crystallites whilst TEM data indicated an average grain size of 12 nm with a standard deviation of 3.8 nm. EBSD analysis revealed a preferential texture of [110] normal to the surface of the metal. This data implied that lattice matchi...

A constrained approach to pre-compensation for TDD OFDM systems

Pre-compensation techniques can be used to enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance of time division duplex (TDD) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication links. With pre-compensation at the transmitter, the power assigned to each subcarrier is varied according to the channel state information (CSI). This paper derives a pre-compensation algorithm for OFDM systems that use coherent quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation on each subcarrier. The algorithm att...
