  • Disparities in length of life across developed countries: Measuring and decomposing changes over time within and between country groups

Published version. Source at http://doi.org/10.1186/s12963-016-0094-0. License CC BY 4.0. Background. Over the past half century the global tendency for improvements in longevity has been uneven across countries. This has resulted in widening of inter-country disparities in life expectancy. Moreover, the pattern of divergence appears to be driven in part by processes at the level of country groupings defined in geopolitical terms. A systematic quantitative analysis of this phenomenon ha...

Physical activity and prisoner's health : a qualitative systematic review

A qualitative systematic review was performed in order to examine the importance and benefit of physical activity to prisoners’ life course, while in incarceration. Physical activity can promote health and prevent diseases and is an important public health means used in the treatment and prevention of various diseases, as well as in the treatment of some mental illnesses such as depressive and anxiety disorders. The prison population has a higher risk of non-communicable diseases and a higher...

Characterization and structural analysis of class D β-lactamases: variants and mutants of OXA-type carbapenemases

The rise and spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria is posing a serious threat to the global health; antibiotic drugs are rendered ineffective and common infectious diseases become harder or impossible to treat. The beta-lactamase enzymes, with their ability to hydrolyze the beta-lactam antibiotics, are a major cause of resistant bacteria. The OXA-beta-lactamase enzymes are one of the most alarming group, as some members of this group have the ability to hydrolyze and inactivate the carbapen...

Three-dimensional ultrasonic imaging in multilayered media

The synthetic aperture focusing technique is a method for focusing ultrasonic scans used in nondestructive testing. Traditionally, the technique has mainly been used for contact testing, where the speed of sound is constant throughout the whole medium, but a number of recently proposed algorithms have extended the technique to multilayered media. One important application for such multilayer methods is immersion testing, where an object is immersed in water and the transducer is scanned wi...

Statistical analysis of fluctuations in the Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer

Experimental data from Alcator C-Mod have been used to analyze large density events occurring at the edge of fusion reactors. The data acquisition methods used are gas puff imaging and Langmuir probes. The data consist of long time series sampled at high frequency, excellent for statistical analysis. Large density events have been analyzed where blobs are found to be consistent with high skewness and kurtosis. The skewness and kurtosis are found to increase with both radius and decreasing ...
