A workshop was held on May 5th and 6th at the Holiday Inn, London (Victoria) on the subject of Poverty Coping Strategies in Malawi. It was organised and facilitated by a three man team from the Social Sciences Department of the Natural Resources Institute (NRI), University of Greenwich, and followed-on from an earlier workshop held in Malawi in March.\ud \ud Both workshops were funded by the UK Government's Department for International Development (DFID), and are part of a consultancy entitled "Malawi: Poverty Coping Strategies Study" which is currently being undertaken by the NRI. The purpose of the consultancy is to develop a better understanding of coping strategies employed by resource poor households in the face of widespread and chronic poverty. Such an understanding will help in the design of more effective and more appropriate short-term safety net interventions and longer-term poverty reduction strategies.
