  • Geomagnetic activity and wind velocity during the Maunder minimum

    B. Mendoza (1997)
Following a given classification of geomagnetic activity, we obtained <i>aa</i> index values for the Maunder minimum (1645–1715). It is found that the recurrent and fluctuating activities were not appreciable and that the shock activity levels were very low. The <i>aa</i> index level was due almost entirely to the quiet days. Calculated average solar-wind velocities were 194.3 km s–1 from 1657 to 1700 and 218.7 km s–1 from ...

A straightforward estimation of the maximum sunspot number for cycle 23

Using the annual number of geomagnetically quiet days (<i>aa</i> &lt; 20 γ) for the year <i>after</i> the solar minimum, this precursor method predicts that the maximum sunspot number for cycle 23 will be 140 ± 32, indicating that cycle 23 will be similar to cycles 21 and 22.<br><br><b>Key words.</b> Solar physics · astrophysics and astronomy (magnetic fields; general)

Reactive Adsorption of Ammonia on Cu-Based MOF/Graphene Composites

New composites based on HKUST-1 and graphene layers are tested for ammonia adsorption at room temperature in both dry and moist conditions. The materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, adsorption of nitrogen, and thermal analyses. Unlike other MOF/GO composites reported in previous studies, these materials are water-stable. Ammonia adsorption capacities on the composites are higher than the ones calculated for the physical mixture of components, suggesting the pre...

Derivation of the three-layer model for surface second-harmonic generation

We carry out an improved ab initio calculation of surface second-harmonic generation (SSHG) from the Si(111)(1×1):H surface. This calculation includes three new features in one formulation: (i) the scissors correction, (ii) the contribution of the nonlocal part of the pseudopotentials, and (iii) the inclusion of a cut function to extract the surface response, all within the independent particle approximation. We apply these improvements on the Si(111)(1×1):H surface and compare with various e...
