  • The impact of migratory flyways on the spread of avian influenza virus in North America

Fourment, Mathieu; Darling, Aaron E.; Holmes, Edward C. (2017)
Projects: ARC | Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP160102146 (DP160102146), NHMRC | Australia Fellowship (1037231)
Background Wild birds are the major reservoir hosts for influenza A viruses (AIVs) and have been implicated in the emergence of pandemic events in livestock and human populations. Understanding how AIVs spread within and across continents is therefore critical to the development of successful strategies to manage and reduce the impact of influenza outbreaks. In North America many bird species undergo seasonal migratory movements along a North-South axis, thereby providing opportunities for vi...

Detection and characterisation of coronaviruses in migratory and non-migratory Australian wild birds

Chamings, Anthony; Nelson, Tiffanie M.; Vibin, Jessy; Wille, Michelle; Klaassen, Marcel; Alexandersen, Soren (2018)
    Projects: ARC | Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP160102146 (DP160102146), NHMRC | 2016 Equipment Grant (9000413)
We evaluated the presence of coronaviruses by PCR in 918 Australian wild bird samples collected during 2016–17. Coronaviruses were detected in 141 samples (15.3%) from species of ducks, shorebirds and herons and from multiple sampling locations. Sequencing of selected positive samples found mainly gammacoronaviruses, but also some deltacoronaviruses. The detection rate of coronaviruses was improved by using multiple PCR assays, as no single assay could detect all coronavirus positive samples....
