  • Targeted sequencing of both DNA strands barcoded and captured individually by RNA probes to identify genome-wide ultra-rare mutations

Wang, Qing; Wang, Xu; Tang, Pheobe S.; O?leary, Grace M.; Zhang, Ming (2017)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881)
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has been widely implemented in biological research and has made a profound impact on patient care. One of the essential NGS applications is to identify disease-causing sequence variants, where high coverage and accuracy are needed. Here, we reported a novel NGS pipeline, termed a Seq uencing System of D igitalized Barcode E ncrypted Single-stranded Library from Extremely Low (quality and quantity) DNA Input with P robe-based DNA E nrichment by R NA probes targ...

What does stakeholder involvement mean for fisheries management?

Aanesen, Margrethe; Armstrong, Claire W.; Bloomfield, Helen J.; Röckmann, Christine (2014)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881)
The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) sets the guidelines for the management of European fisheries. The CFP is revised every 10 years, and the last two revisions have laid the groundwork for extending stakeholder participation in European Union fisheries management. The fishery industry and nongovernmental organization (NGOs) especially are recommended to be given greater influence. In this paper we report results from an international survey on fisheries stakeholders' preferences for the three p...

Stakeholder Influence and Optimal Regulations: A Common-Agency Analysis of Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Regulations

Aanesen, Margrethe; Armstrong, Claire W. (2013)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881)
One aspect of ecosystem-based management is to include new stakeholders. When an environmental NGO (ENGO) gets a say in the fisheries management, this will affect the authorities' optimal regulation. Combining a principal-agent model and a steady-state bioeconomic model, we show that under symmetric information the authorities will moderate their use of regulation as a response to the ENGO's increased influence. However, the aggregate of the authorities' and the ENGO's regulations will be str...

Development and selection of operational management strategies to achieve policy objectives

    Piet, G.J.; Rockmann, C.; Aanesen, M.; Armstrong, C.; Quesne, Le, W.; Bloomfield, H.; Hal, van, R. (2011)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881)
Since the reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy in 2002, effort has been devoted to addressing the governance, scientific, social and economic issues required to introduce an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) in Europe. Fisheries management needs to support the three pillars of sustainability (ecological, social and economic) and Fisheries Ecosystem Plans (FEPs) have been developed as a tool to assist managers considering the ecological, social and economic implications of ...

The Political Game of European Fisheries Management

Aanesen, Margrethe; Armstrong, Claire W. (2015)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881)
Accepted manuscript version. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10640-015-9878-0 European fisheries activities are subject to a hierarchy of regulatory authorities. This raises questions regarding the implications of strategic interaction between different authority levels concerning the regulation of these activities. We apply a bio-economic objective function where fishers and regulators have environmental, economic and social prefer...

Importance of N2-Fixation on the Productivity at the North-Western Azores Current/Front System, and the Abundance of Diazotrophic Unicellular Cyanobacteria

Riou, Virginie; Fonseca-Batista, Debany; Roukaerts, Arnout; Biegala, Isabelle C.; Prakya, Shree Ram; Magalh?es Loureiro, Clara; Santos, Mariana; Muniz-Piniella, Angel E.; Schmiing, Mara; Elskens, Marc; Brion, Natacha; Martins, M. Ana; Dehairs, Frank (2016)
    Projects: EC | MEFEPO (212881), EC | EUROFLEETS (228344)
To understand the impact of the northwestern Azores Current Front (NW-AzC/AzF) system on HCO3-- and N-2-fixation activities and unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria (UCYN) distribution, we combined geochemical and biological approaches from the oligotrophic surface to upper mesopelagic waters. N-2-fixation was observed to sustain 45-85% of the HCO3--fixation in the picoplanktonic fraction performing 47% of the total C-fixation at the deep chlorophyll maximum north and south of the AzF. N2-f...
