Providing Databases for Different Indoor Positioning Technologies: Pros and Cons of Magnetic Field and Wi-Fi Based Positioning

Torres-Sospedra, Joaquín; Montoliu, Raul; Mendoza-Silva, Germán M.; Belmonte, Oscar; Rambla, David; Huerta, Joaquín (2016)
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
Localization is one of the main pillars for indoor services. However, it is still very difficult for the mobile sensing community to compare state-of-the-art indoor positioning systems due to the scarcity of publicly available databases. To make fair and meaningful comparisons between indoor positioning systems, they must be evaluated in the same situation, or in the same sets of situations. In this paper, two databases are introduced for studying the performance of magnetic field an...

DESIGN FOR CONNECTING SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURES WITH SENSOR WEB (SENSDI)

    D. Bhattacharya; M. Painho (2016)
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
Integrating Sensor Web With Spatial Data Infrastructures (SENSDI) aims to extend SDIs with sensor web enablement, converging geospatial and built infrastructure, and implement test cases with sensor data and SDI. It is about research to harness the sensed environment by utilizing domain specific sensor data to create a generalized sensor webframework. The challenges being semantic enablement for Spatial Data Infrastructures, and connecting the interfaces of SDI with interfaces of Sensor Web. ...

Augmented Smart Cities Integrating Sensor Web and Spatial Data Infrastructure (SmaCiSENS)

    Painho, Marco; Bhattacharya, Devanjan
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
Spatio-temporal aspects of data lead to critical information. Sensors capture data at all scales continually so it is imperative that useful information be extracted ubiquitously and regularly. Location plays a vital part by helping understand relations between datasets. It is crucial to link developmental works with spatial attributes and current challenge is to create an open platform that manages real-time sensor data and provides critical spatial analytics atop expert domain knowledge pro...

    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
The GEO-C doctoral programme, entitled “Geoinformatics: Enabling Open Cities”, is funded by the EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (International Training Networks (ITN), European Joint Doctorates) until December 2018, and is managed by three European universities in Germany, Portugal and Spain. 15 doctoral grantholders (Early Stage Researchers) were selected to work on specific three-year projects, all contributing to improving the notion of open cities, and specifically to an Open City Toolk...

Place and city: Operationalizing sense of place and social capital in the urban context

Acedo, Albert; Painho, Marco; Casteleyn, Sven (2017)
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
The academic interest in social concepts in city contexts, such as sense of place and social capital, has been growing in the last decades. We present a systematic literature review that confirms the strong relationship between sense of place and social capital, from a social sciences point-of-view. It also reveal that little attention has been paid to their spatial dimensions at the urban level, thereby missing the chance to exploit socio-spatial knowledge to improve the day-to-day life in a...

    Climate projections and downscaling techniques

Šmid, Marek; Costa, Ana Cristina (2017)
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
Urban systems are not only major drivers of climate change but also the impact hotspots. In the context of the planet currently undergoing a process of greenhouse warming, and simultaneously predominantly urban based ever continuing population growth, our agglomerations became vulnerable to chain reactions triggered by climate related hazards. Hence, the reliable and cost-effective assessment of future impact is of high importance. While the climate community has invested significant effort t...
  • Initial Relevant Routes And Geospatial Objects For Refugees And Asylum Seekers In Ms

Young refugees; Local Students; Student Assistants; Ana Maria Bustamante (2017)

Categories Of Datasets Offered By Current Open Data Portals

Degbelo, Auriol; Trilles, Sergi; Bhattacharya, Devanjan (2016)
    Publisher: Zenodo
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
This dataset lists categories of open datasets from 40 European open data catalogs. The 40 European data catalogues were taken from four countries (France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom) at a rate of 10 per country. These categories are  an indicator of the topics of interests in the respective countries (back in 2016), the types of questions data publishers assume users will ask, and ultimately the types of questions citizens can ask.

Statistical Data From Muenster (2010-2014) As Rdf

    Degbelo, Auriol (2016)
    Publisher: Zenodo
    Projects: EC | GEO-C (642332)
This dataset is a curated statistical dataset from the Muenster City Council in RDF (Resource Description Framework) format. The City Council of Muenster has provided statistical datasets about Muenster covering the period 2010-2014 in PDF (Portable Document Format). Since PDF is not machine readable, students from the University of Muenster have tried to convert this statistical data into RDF, making therefore the data consumable by machines. The dataset covers five different topics: ...
