В 1974г. Марком Снайдером  введено понятие «self-monitoring»,   методика его измерения приобрела статус мощного диагностического конструкта с высоким интерпретативным и прогностическим потенциалом.  Конструкт  выходит за пределы психологии индивидуальных различий, поскольку  измеряет не черту личности, а уровень  рефлексии  о ситуационной адекватности  поведения. В критических обзорах конструкт  рассматривается с позиции психологии субъекта, а не психологии личности, его обсуждают в парадигме рефлексивной психологии  и трактуют как способность субъекта  сознательно управлять  психодинамикой идентичности личности для контроля поведения в ситуации.
