Развитие верхнего палеолита Монголии, начиная с самых ранних его этапов, связано с несколькими разрывами в культурно-стратиграфической последовательности, обусловленными с периодами перестройки климата и условий окружающей среды. Последний ледниковый максимум (ПЛМ) был одним из таких климатических периодов, когда отмечались перерывы в заселении этого региона. Отсутствие датированных комплексов в промежутке от 23 000 до 21 000 л.н. и первое появление микропластинчатой технологии редукции клиновидных нуклеусов только в постПЛМ фазе позднего верхнего палеолита может свидетельствовать о разрыве культурных традиций между ранним и средним верхним палеолитом и поздним верхним палеолитом и вероятной смене населения, обладающего отличающимся культурным набором. По всей вероятности, человеческие популяции, заселявшие территорию Забайкалья через бассейн реки Селенги, имели тесные культурные контакты с палеолитическим населением Северной Монголии. Имеющиеся данные позволяют предполагать возможность повторного заселения Монголии южносибирскими популяциями в период, предшествующий ПЛМ.
