Effects of twenty synthetic cyclopentane β,β'-triketones and their sodium salts on development of the infection caused by tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) in the leaves of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi-nc were studied. It was shown that the most antiviral effect exibit Na-salts of 2-acetyl-4,7-dithia-2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-1H-indene-1,3-dione, 2-acetyl-4-oxa-7-thio-2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-1H-indene-1,3-dione and 2-acetyl-4,5-didodecylthiacyclopent-4-ene-1,3-dione. Inoculation of Xanthi-nc leaves with TMV mixed with Na-salts of these compounds (2 mg/ml) resulted in a significant decrease (98%) in the number of local lesions as compared to leaves inoculated with TMV alone. Leaves treated with these salts at a concentration of 2 mg/ml did not show any toxic symptoms.
