The advective method for estimating the sensible flux from the ocean to the atmosphere, devised by Bullock & Johnson (1972) for use in data-sparse oceanic regions, is compared with the bulk aerodynamic method. The results from a case study over the North Atlantic indicate that the method of Bullock & Johnson approximates the spatial distribution obtained by the aerodynamic method but underestimates the magnitude of the sensible heat flux.DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1977.tb00728.x
