This workshop built upon pilot study data about adapted cycling, exploring what ‘Participation in Recreational activities’ means for Disabled Children. The context of the hybridity of a disabled childhood from an eight year old girl with cerebral palsy was used with permission. Her digital story was shown and the transcript explored using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis approach. The descriptive, linguistic and conceptual perspectives were discussed in the workshop. \ud Dawn’s background is Children’s physiotherapy and she is now exploring the ‘Lifeworld’ of children and youth with cerebral palsy as they seek to participate in recreational activities including cycling. The ‘being’ of a disabled child is often lost in practice, as the cost effectiveness of what they may ‘become’ can over shadow their childhood. Their voice is rarely heard and when there are extra barriers to listening such as the need for communication aids and signing, their voice is ‘lost’. \ud This digital story enabled the audience to hear the voice of a disabled child about their ‘being’, this is different to that of a typically developing child but can still be fun and enjoyable. The challenge for healthcare practitioners is to balance the ‘fixing’ of the child with their need to participate in a meaningful way in what they enjoy doing.
