The liturgical scholarship of Alexander Penrose Forbes and George Hay Forbes was motivated and informed by the liturgical controversies surrounding the Scottish Communion Office in the mid nineteenth century. An examination of their correspondence shows how the Forbes brothers were the hub of an international ecumenical network of the leading liturgical, medieval and Celtic scholars of the day.
