Continuing professional development (CPD) for healthcare professionals is an important issue in the maintenance of high standards of patient care. The non-medical healthcare professions have a varied history of CPD. This article presents how CPD has developed and emerged for the largest of the healthcare professions in the United Kingdom – nursing - and a newly emerging healthcare professional group, paramedic practitioners, including the emergence of CPD programmes for these professions, key current issues and policy drivers.
