Most coal-fired power plants are now substituting a significant proportion of their traditional fuels with biomass materials of various types. They offer an environmentally sound, sustainable, and economic approach to energy production. However in handling biomass\ud materials many flow problems arise, for example excessive transportation costs, excessive storage space requirements, dust emission, etc. One potential solution to these problems\ud addressed here is to produce biomass pellets.\ud This paper presents a review of the available techniques for biomass co-firing, biomass pelletization, and insights into the problems of making biomass pellets, and what advantages and disadvantages they have in terms of handling issues before and after combustion with coal. Also some preliminary studies on making biomass/coal pellets are presented. The attempts sought to overcome the disadvantages of the existing pure biomass pellets. Finally the advantages of these new types of biomass/coal pellets are discussed.
