This thesis makes a study of the environmental impact\ud of waste incineration and particularly of hospital waste\ud incineration. Literature relevant to the topic is\ud discussed. The environmental impact of the incineration\ud process itself and the different methods used in the\ud disposal of wastes was assessed.\ud The nature of waste is reviewed in relation to\ud quantities, composition and classification. Legislation\ud concerning hospital waste disposal is summarised.\ud The study also focuses on methods of waste disposal\ud including the characteristics and nature of incineration,\ud the activities involved in the combustion process of\ud hospital waste and the nature of incinerator stack\ud emissions and the biological material released to the\ud environment. Other methods of disposal are explained. The\ud perceived and inherent risks associated with hospital waste\ud incineration are discussed.\ud The results of the data collected during this research\ud are presented, analyzed and discussed. The thesis also\ud anal yses the link between hospital waste incineration and\ud EIA. 1n addition the importance of the effects of hospital\ud waste incineration on human health are discussed.\ud Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is discussed\ud including its methodology. The advantages, disadvantages\ud and its use in the UK and Iran are reviewed.\ud A critique of the Environmental Impact Assessment\ud submitted by Environmental Technology Consultants Ltd.\ud (ETC). for the proposed incinerator at Kirkby is given.\ud The thesis concludes with a consideration of the\ud application of EIA techniques to planning applications for\ud hospital waste incinerator and makes a number of\ud recommendations as to their use and applicability.
